The Old Media: More Distrusted Than Ever

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Gallup polling agency has released its annual assessment of how Americans view the Old Media establishment and it isn't good for the Old Media. Gallup found more people than ever have no trust in the Old Media (57 percent) and those that do trust the media have fallen to an all time low (43 percent). These are the most extreme ratings that Gallup has ever seen.

"For a fourth straight year," Gallup says, "the majority of Americans say they have little or no trust in the mass media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly."

Even more striking is the overwhelming feeling among Americans that the Old Media is too liberal.

Nearly half of Americans (48%) say the media are too liberal, tying the high end of the narrow 44% to 48% range recorded over the past decade. One-third say the media are just about right while 15% say they are too conservative. Overall, perceptions of bias have remained quite steady over this tumultuous period of change for the media, marked by the growth of cable and Internet news sources. Americans' views now are in fact identical to those in 2004, despite the many changes in the industry since then.

Despite the left-wing's claims that the media is "corporate controlled" and obviously biased to the right, Americans aren't fooled and seem to instinctively understand that the Old Media is stuffed to the gills with left-wingers that are entirely biased against conservatives and Republicans.

It's no surprise that the great majority of journalists have been found to be donors to the Democrat Party.

Then there is the way the Old Media has tried to destroy Sarah Palin. Even people that don't much like the former Governor of Alaska understand that the Old Media establishment has indulged its inner partisan in attacking her and her family. For all the unqualified, sycophantic love that the media doled out to Obama during the entire 2008 presidential election, they heaped precisely the inverse ratio of emption on Palin and this did not escape the notice of the American public.

In the end it is striking to see the constant distrust that America has in the Old Media and telling that this distrust has been steadily increasing over the last four years.
