The Washington Post (of all things) produced this apocalyptic opinion piece on the fate of the Democrats.

There's really no gentle way to say this, so I'm just going to be blunt: In some ways, the political situation post-Nov. 2 is even worse for the Democrats than it may appear. And I am not just referring to the colossal losses they experienced in state legislatures -- a 650+ seat swing in favor of the GOP that has left the Dems in control of the fewest state legislatures since 1928. The resulting pro-GOP gerrymandering may lastingly blunt the demographic advantage Democrats could otherwise expect to reap from population trends such as the growth of Hispanic America.

There is a double whammy that Herr Lane is referring to. It is the loss of Democratic electors in the Electoral College.

No, what's really bad for President Obama and his party is the likely impact of the 2010 Census and ensuing House of Representatives reapportionment on the distribution of votes in the 2012 Electoral College. We can talk all day about whether a majority of voters would support Obama for re-election or not, but what really counts in presidential elections is the Electoral College. Each state's electoral vote equals its number of representatives in the House plus two, for its Senate delegation. And since the U.S. population continues to flow South and West, reapportionment will probably add House seats in red states and subtract them in blue states. Thus, the Census looks like a setback for Democratic chances to win the 270 electoral votes necessary to become president.

The Electoral College was established in Article II of the US Constitution and is now comprised of 538 "electors". Let's cut to the chase.

[...] Removing Ohio, Florida and Nevada from the analysis, because they are too unpredictable, it looks like Republicans can pretty much count on an additional 7 electoral votes (Arizona, Georgia, South Carolina, 4 in Texas, and Utah, minus the loss of one vote in Louisiana) in 2012, while the Democrats can count on 7 fewer (losses in Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota, offset by a gain in Washington).

As of January 2011, there will be seven fewer Blue State electors who will be picked up by Red States. Using the 2008 Presidential campaign where McCain (a weak candidate) grabbed 22 states for a total of 173 electoral votes, the Republican bottom line may be about to grow to 180. The magic number of 271 can be had by just holding on to six states that more often than not have swung Republican: Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Indiana, Virginia and Nevada.

As it happens, all six of these states, except for North Carolina, will have Republican governors next year, and all six, except for Nevada, will have Republican state legislatures.

Get that fork ready. It may be that the Dems are finally done. And we can thank Obama, Reid and Pelosi for marinating their members, preheating the oven and selecting the spices. Even now they just can't figure out how to turn off the gas and cool the rheotric.

Guess not.
The Obama-Pelosi Regime tripled the national deficit in one year.

(The Captain's Comments)
Then they did it again.

They doubled the unemployment rate from where it was when they took over Congress.

(Source: US Misery Index)

48 of 50 states have lost jobs since they rammed through their Trillion dollar stimulus bill. The Obama-Pelosi economic plan resulted in a cumulative 7.5 million jobs deficit. In fact, Barack Obama is the worst jobs president since the Great Depression.

Tonight the former community organizer told "60 Minutes", "I get discouraged. I thought the economy would have gotten better by now."
The Politico reported:

Asked by correspondent Steve Kroft if it were true, as Republicans have suggested, that the election was a referendum on him and the Democratic Party, Obama replied: "I think first and foremost, it was a referendum on the economy. And the party in power was held responsible for an economy that is still underperforming and where a lot of folks are still hurting.

He acknowledged that he thought the economy would have improved more and that he sometimes feels powerless when it comes to spurring growth.

"I do get discouraged, I mean, there are times where I thought the economy would [have] gotten better by now," Obama said. "As president… you're held responsible for everything. But you don't always have control of everything. Especially an economy this big— there are limited tools to encourage— the kind of job growth that we need," he said, quickly adding that he was "positive" that the U.S. economy will eventually rebound.

Ed Schultz Admits That MSNBC Is in the Tank for Obama and Progressive Movement

Despite all the obnoxious personalities, MSNBC is preferable to CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, CNN, etc. in that at least it doesn't pretend to be anything other than what all of them are: a soapbox for moonbat propaganda. Lawrence O'Donnell openly admits to sharing the ideology of maniacal dictators like Stalin and Hitler, and Ed the Red Schultz confesses this:

"Heck, this is the truth channel, when it comes to defending the Obama administration and the progressive [i.e., hard left] movement in this country."

So much for the press as a brake on government power.

"On the subject of Sarah Palin in 2012, one of the unspoken problems that she does have is her quitting as governor midway through her first term. It is like Ted Kennedy's Chappaquiddick. It was not a problem among Democrats."

Well it's sorta similar… Except that Ted Kennedy killed a girl.
Teddy Kennedy killed Mary Jo Kepechne after a party on July 18, 1969.
Her body was found early in the morning on July 19, 1969.

Barack Obama Would Sneak Off to Koran Classes Says Former Teacher

via Gateway Pundit by Jim Hoft on 11/7/10

After years in the spotlight and two years in the White House a media outlet is finally reporting on Barack Obama's Muslim youth.

Malik Obama, older Muslim brother to Barack Obama, holds an undated picture of Barak, left, and himself, middle, and an unidentified friend in his shop in eastern Kenya. (Karel Prinsloo, AP)

The Australian
reported, via Free Republic:

AS a schoolboy in Jakarta, Barack Obama attended Muslim prayer sessions with his classmates against the wishes of his mother.

The US President's former grade three teacher said that Mr Obama – who was known as "Barry" when he attended the Menteng One school in Jakarta – studied the Koran and went to classes on Islam, despite the objections of Anne Dunham, a Roman Catholic.

The teacher's recollections will add to speculation about Mr Obama's links to Islam during his much-anticipated visit to Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, as part of his ten-day tour of Asia.

His middle name, Hussein, and the fact that his stepfather was a Muslim, have combined to perpetuate rumours about Mr Obama's religious leanings. The number of Americans who think that he is a Muslim has grown since his inauguration to one in five.

Mr Obama moved to Indonesia with his mother and Indonesian stepfather, Lolo Soetoro, when he was 6, and lived there for four years. In his memoirs he recalled his time in the country as the "bounty of a young man's life" and there is affection and pride among Indonesians for the boy who ended up as President of the United States.

The teacher, Effendi, who taught at Menteng One for 29 years, remembers Mr Obama as a "fat, curly-haired, curious boy". The school had an international mix of pupils, including Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims.

Mr Obama attended classes on Islam while the Christians attended classes on Christianity, said Effendi. Barry, he said, was alone among the pupils in that he insisted on attending both.

"His mother did not like him learning Islam, although his father was a Muslim. Sometimes she came to the school; she was angry with the religious teacher and said 'Why did you teach him the Koran?'" said Effendi.

"But he kept going to the classes because he was interested in Islam. He would also join the other pupils for Muslim prayers."

Both Barack Obama's father and step-father were Muslim.

Former Obama Assistant Blames Comcast and Fox for Olbermann Suspension

Far left America in crisis: Day 3, and it's getting dumber by the minute.
Susan Crawford, a former special assistant to President Obama for technology policy, sees a potential culprit in MSNBC's decision to suspend anchor Keith Olbermann last week: maybe Comcast had something to do with it. Comcast is in the midst of a merger with NBC Universal, the owner of MSNBC.

Crawford, whose Twitter handle is @scrawford, tweeted on Saturday: "someone should find out whether any comcast connection to olbermann fracas - and remember Quiz Show plot line."

Asked whether she was serious, Crawford confirmed that she was. She has previously raised concern that the merger might give Comcast the ability to tamper with MSNBC, which has a left-leaning reputation, in order to maintain a positive business relationship with Fox, which has a right-leaning reputation.

"What happens to MSNBC post-merger?" she wrote in a blog post last month. "Right now, it’s providing the only response to Fox News. Comcast won’t want to irritate Fox - you can’t be a pay-TV distributor without Fox News, in the same way that you can’t be a pay-TV distributor without ESPN. Fox News is a truck running downhill."

Pelosi: We Put 'Convictions over Politics'

Nancy Pelosi will not be the Speaker of the House come January, but she's certainly telling everyone that she was one of the best in this nation's history. On Pelosi's website she chronicles why she's running for the House minority leader position, despite being one of the most disliked and divisive Democratic leaders.

She, of course, explains that the Congress 'saved' the economy and couches the Democratic 'accomplishments' with a supreme amount of spin. With her, they were able to rescue the economy through their 'productive' actions-- making them historic, too! Her site is filled with the ordinary liberal hackery but it appears that in her own method of clinging to power it has become particularly both interesting and sickening.

Furthermore, the San Francisco Congresswoman spends the next two paragraphs explaining that ObamaCare must be saved from the Republican onslaught and that she and the Democrats will work in a bipartisan way! Just like they have been for the last two years?

Wow. Can you wait until he moment that she is no longer Speaker of the House?

Obamas Party Down in Mumbai While America Suffers (Video)

It's nice to know they're enjoying themselves blowing hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in India while America suffers.

The Obamas are having a grand time in India.
NDTV reported:

US first couple Barack and Michelle Obama hit the dance floor to a foot-tapping Marathi folk number, joining a group of students at the Holy Name school to participate in symbolic Diwali festivities.

The US President and the First Lady's engagement for the day started at the Holy Name High School in upmarket Colaba locality in south Mumbai where a group of students entertained them with a cultural extravaganza.

The Obamas, who lit a lamp to mark the celebrations, were greeted by the students in traditional Indian attire as they interacted with the children, shaking hands and posing for pictures. The students were seen gleefully clicking the couple's photos using cellphone cameras.

The Obamas are bringing 250 U.S. executives including GE chief Jeffrey Immelt and Honeywell's David Cote, which the U.S. India Business Council says is the largest such delegation to ever accompany a president on a foreign visit. The presidents of six universities, including Georgetown and Duke, are also set to come.

Muslims in India Outraged Over Obama’s Security Dog Named “Khan”

Rediff.com reported, via ROP:

Muslims in Mumbai are up in arms against a United States military sniffer dog allegedly with name tag of 'Khan' that has landed in the city as part of President Barack Obama security arrangements.

On Tuesday, the German Shepherd arrived in the Mumbai airport from a Hercules C130 transport plane. The German Shepherd allegedly had a tag around its neck which read 'MWD Khan.' MWD stands for Military Working Dog. Khan is alleged to be the name of the dog.

Angry Muslims in the city and the state are threatening to protest this 'insult' to the community.

The issue became a rage when a tabloid had reported the incident and quoted veteran actor Raza Murad objecting to the dog being named 'Khan.'

Eric Cantor: Dems Didn’t Get the Message If Pelosi is Made Minority Leader

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Virginia) told Chris Wallace today on FOX News Sunday that if democrats make Nancy Pelosi Minority Leader, they didn't get the message.
The Hill reported:

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Sunday that Democrats "just didn't get the message from the voters this election" if they make Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) their next majority leader.

"I mean, the voters outright rejected the agenda that she's been about. And here they're going to put her back in charge," Cantor, in line to become the House majority leader in the next Congress, said on "Fox News Sunday."

"I mean this is the woman who really, I think, puts ideology first, and there have been no results for the American people," he said. "And that seems the direction they want to take again. It just doesn't make sense."

Pelosi announced via Twitter on Friday that she would run for the post. Democrats Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), who is stepping down as head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and James Clyburn (D-S.C.), the majority whip who will be running against Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) for minority whip in the next Congress, supported Pelosi on shows Sunday.

Another liberal Democrat who didn’t get the message

via I Bleed Crimson Red by GulfCoastBamaFan on 11/7/10

A former staffer for Alabama Representative Artur Davis (D, AL-07), lawyer and defeated candidate for the Alabama House of Representatives (2006) and Alabama State Treasurer (2010) weighs in on the political Tsunami that swept Republicans into the majority in the US House of Representatives as well as both houses of the Alabama Legislature. His name is Jeremy Sherer, a Birmingham attorney whose practice specialty is labor law.

Guess what, sports fans? He didn't get it:

Frankly — and I say this as an Alabamian who has twice sought elected office on the Democratic ticket — as definite as last week's Republican tsunami was and as predictable as it might have been, it also was long overdue.

For too long, Alabama Democratic leaders have fallen short in crafting and implementing a dynamic, progressive agenda in a state that is riddled with public policy faults.

Over the past 136 years, despite controlling both the Alabama Legislature and governor's office for all but approximately 13 years, Democrats have failed to reform Alabama's Constitution, balance its regressive tax structure, implement substantive environmental protections and clean up campaign finance and electoral processes.

The 136-year reign of Democrats in Montgomery began with populism and ended with populism. Too many of those who would most benefit from traditional Democratic ideas regarding taxation, educational opportunity, campaign finance disclosure, environmental protections and occupational safety regulations were disaffected due to Democratic ineffectiveness or lack of action.

The need for the dynamic, progressive ideas that Democrats are most likely to provide is still present in Alabama. But the length of the journey through the political wilderness for Alabama Democrats is only beginning, and will last until the party refocuses itself and develops ideas that truly serve the public instead of those that nurture career politicians and entrenched interests.

Tuesday's results were conclusive that Alabama's Democratic establishment has strayed from its cause and lost sight of the dream.

Depending upon the degree of denial by some within the party regarding its waywardness, and depending too on Republican effectiveness in redistricting, I and my fellow Democrats could have more than ample time to not only rededicate ourselves to the cause, but to also dwell upon a dream that, if not lost, has at the very least been deferred.

Sherer doesn't get it.  Like most flaming leftists, Sherer thinks that Democrats got their clocks cleaned last Tuesday not because they had strayed too far to the left, but that they hadn't strayed far enough. In an excellent column at The Right Sphere, RB precisely describes the mood of the electorate last Tuesday. Americans weren't upset over the inability or unwillingness of Democrats to push their progressive agenda.  It was the opposite—the audacity of the Progressives shocked and angered the center-right majority of the country to the point where no one felt it acceptable to go along with it anymore. They'd had enough of the left's progressivism, and they rose up to smite the leftist beast.

In my own Straight Ticket column on October 22, I wrote:

As it is now, The Democrats have a far left-wing party that is completely out of touch with the center-right majority in America today, and it is actually the Republican Party that now embraces the conservative Democratic ideals that allowed the party to rule both houses of Congress for a generation.  Until the good and decent Democrats—like my old friend—have no choice but to take back their party and restore the American ideals it once held, they can't be allowed to return to office.

The Democrat Party needs to clean house.  It needs to rid itself of elitist, progressive left-wing ideologues who think you're about to vote against them out of fear and frustration. It's a ruling class arrogance that convinces them that you aren't smart enough, elite enough or nuanced enough to know what's really good for you.  You need to leave important things like Health Care, Climate Change and Amnesty up to them, you peasant. In fact, the only reason why they still tolerate peasants at the polls is because of that pesky Second Amendment thing.

Some of the more reasonable, sane and centrist Democrats got the message. Others, like Sherer and members of the "professional left" elitist bloggers, obviously have not. For Sherer and those liberal elitists with their fingers still stuck in their ears, let me lay it out for you.

The Progressive Experiment has failed.  The people have rejected it altogether, in a historic election that overturned not only the arrogant Obama-Reid-Pelosi triumvirate, but overturned 136 years of Democrat control of the Alabama government. It wasn't because you didn't do enough to move the progressive agenda forward. It was that you pushed too hard and tried to exert too much control over the lives of ordinary Americans.

Sherer's ideas on "taxation, educational opportunity, campaign finance disclosure, environmental protections and occupational safety regulations" would translate into:

  • Raising taxes;
  • Trying to force equal education results vs equal opportunity;
  • Forcing conservative political contributors to be outed so that they can be harassed by the labor and environmental  interests he represents;
  • Further erosion of private property rights and the principles of contract law in the name of "environmental protection;"
  • Greater state and union power over private sector hiring and the right to work.

The people of Alabama, and the people of the United States, have had enough of that crap.  THAT was the message you got last Tuesday. You can choose to "get it," or you can continue down the River Denial. When the Democrat party rids itself of such ideological nonsense as professed by its radical left wing, then they might regain the trust of the center-right electorate.

Until then, have a nice journey in the wilderness.
