GOP Freshmen Say They Were Not Invited to Tea Party Patriots Event

GOP freshmen House members said they did not receive an invitation to the Tea Party Patriots event today. The Republicans said they didn't know it was happening.
The Hill reported:

…Incoming members say they never received an invitation to participate in the Tea Party Patriots event held in the Ronald Reagan building in Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

"Nobody received any type of (invitation), it was just 'this is what's happening, please don't go here,' but I'm a big boy and I can choose where I need to go and where I need to be," incoming Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said in an interview on Sunday afternoon before heading into a meeting at the Capitol Hill Club, a Republican unofficial headquarters in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol, with members of his freshmen class.

"I didn't know it was happening until I started getting inundated with emails and (messages) filling up my voicemail,"
West's colleague told The Hill.

One irate incoming member told The Hill that the Tea Party tactic to release personal contact information of the new class was "extremely counterproductive and, in all honesty, an incredible violation of privacy."

Obama Says He Will Redouble Efforts on Core Issues

Good Grief… Make It Stop!

Obama told reporters today on the way back to Washington from his failed Asian trip that he will redouble his efforts on core issues.
ABC reported:

En route back to Washington after a 10-day trip overseas, President Obama was introspective about his first two years in office. The president told reporters aboard Air Force One that he had an "obsessive focus" on policy and he will now "redouble" efforts to get back to his core principles.

Obama said he "neglected" things that matter a lot to Americans in his rush to get major legislation passed. He explained those things as maintaining a bipartisan tone, dealing with earmarks, making sure that policy decisions are fully debated and shaping public opinion. He can better focus on these principals now, the president explained, because the economy is more stable.

The president plans to meet with Congressional leadership this week and said he expects that even though his party lost badly in the midterm election, Republicans will work with him to get things done.

"I am very confident that the American people were not issuing a mandate for gridlock," Obama said. "They want to see us make progress."

Obama repeated his belief that the country can't afford to extend the Bush tax cuts for people earning more than $250,000 a year.

"I believe it is a mistake for us to borrow $700 billion to make tax cuts permanent for millionaires and billionaires," he said.

Axelrod: No ‘Permanent’ Tax Cuts for Wealthy

via The Blaze - Stories by Scott Baker on 11/14/10

WASHINGTON (AP) — A top adviser to President Barack Obama says the White House objects to "permanent" tax cuts for the wealthy but is silent on the possibility of extending current tax rates for the short term.

Obama adviser David Axelrod says the president only wants to make permanent the tax cuts for the middle class that expire at the end of this year. He urged Congress to resolve the tax-cut question during a lame-duck session of Congress.

Options facing Congress include extending middle-class tax cuts permanently while continuing tax cuts for the wealthy for only one or two years, or to adopt short-term extensions of all tax cuts.

Axelrod says he would leave negotiations to Obama and lawmakers. He appeared on "Fox News Sunday" and NBC's "Meet the Press."

Going on trial over violating ethics, Charlie Rangel violates ethics to pay ...

Sent to you by Jay via Google Reader:

via I Bleed Crimson Red by GulfCoastBamaFan on 11/14/10

Rangel is acting like a man who probably realizes he won't have a job much longer. The NYPost.com is reporting that Rangel "raided" his own National Leadership PAC for a total of $393,000 to pay for his defense in the upcoming House ethics trial, which begins this week.

Legal experts have said that this violates House ethics policy.

Leadership PACs are typically used by politicians to donate money to other candidates.

But Rangel seems to have run afoul of House ethics rules. Lawmakers are generally allowed to use campaign cash to pay their lawyers, but this is limited to money in their personal campaign committee and they must ask permission first, the campaign-finance lawyer said.

"The only campaign funds that a member may use to pay for congressional expenses are funds of his or her principal campaign committee -- not the funds of a leadership PAC or a multicandidate committee," according to the House Ethics Manual.

Legal fees tied to a campaign, election or performance of official duties are considered congressional expenses.

"Accepting money or payment for legal expenses from any other source, including a PAC, would be a gift and is barred by the House rules," the lawyer said.

It boggles the mind that a corrupt politician, going on trial for a host of transgressions of Congress' ethics rules, would breach Congress' ethics rules to pay for his defense.

Or, does it?

Thanks Barack… Greenspan Says High US Deficits Could Spark Bond Crisis

The Obama-Pelosi-Reid Regime tripled the national deficit in one year. Obama passed the historic Trillion dollar deficit mark two years in a row.

(Captain's Comments)

Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told an audience today that the record high US deficits could spark a bond crisis.
Reuters reported:

The United States must move to rein in its massive budget deficits or it faces the risk of a bond market crisis, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Sunday.

"We've got to resolve this issue," Greenspan said of the ballooning U.S. debt levels.

He spoke about the issue as a panel, chaired by former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles and former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson, is due to deliver a report on debt and deficits by December 1.

A draft report made public last week offered a series of politically tough tax and spending choices that would seek to reduce the debt by $4 trillion by 2020.

The report received a lukewarm reception from some politicians and outright condemnation by others, including House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who pronounced the ideas "simply unacceptable."

Disaster… Obama's job approval rating drops to 42%.

Gallup tracks daily the percentage of Americans who approve or disapprove of the job Barack Obama is doing as president. Results are based on telephone interviews with approximately 1,500 national adults; Margin of error is ±3 percentage points.

It took George W. Bush 5 years to reach this same low.

Sorry, libs we're not buying it.

In August 2010 71% of Missouri voters soundly rejected Obamacare at the polls. In response to this, leftist Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) scolded her stupid constituents saying, "People 'don't realize' how beneficial the "mandate" for health care will be."

We won't forget, Claire.

And, we won't forget your votes for the failed stimulus, banking regulation and the rest of Obama's job-killing policies.

Now the state-run media is trying to paint far left McCaskill as a "centrist."
The Hill reported:

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) warned Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) of "disloyalty" to President Obama if she should seek to distance herself from the White House in her re-election campaign.

Cleaver, who's seen as the likely next leader of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), cautioned the centrist senator of distancing herself from Obama, the way many endangered incumbents had done in the closing weeks of the 2012 election.

"Any attempt to extricate herself from him will be an act of disloyalty," Cleaver told McClatchy in a piece profiling McCaskill's re-election campaign. "She will not do that at all."

McCaskill is one of the centrist Democrats who managed victory in the 2006 election thanks to the headwinds favoring her party in that cycle.

Since winning, though, there have been signs that the Show-Me State has trended Republican. Rep. Roy Blunt (R) easily secured victory in the state's Senate race this fall, for instance. And McCaskill might feel justified in running from Obama in 2012, since it was one of the few swing states Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) managed to hold onto the 2008 presidential election, while Obama was sweeping to victory elsewhere.

McCaskill has sided with the president and majority Democrats on a series of key votes. She voted for healthcare reform, Wall Street reform and the stimulus bill.

Good luck with that "centrist" label Claire.
We will never forget.

When Barack Obama became president in January 2009, he began a campaign to weaken America. I'm not talking about military cuts; I'm speaking of America's stature.  Barack Obama famously refused to acknowledge American Exceptionalism in 2009. He bowed to kings and princes, then denied doing so, then bowed again and again. His White House has driven down the dollar. Timothy Geithner, Obama's Secretary of the Treasury, warns that the world economy must "rebalance" with less reliance on America.

Barack Obama is short-selling America.

The results of a US President talking down his own country are stark.  America is losing prestige, and the office of our president loses prestige right along with the rest of us.

Asian Embarrassment

In the last week, Barack Obama got a taste of the new, devalued USA.  In South Korea and Japan, Obama was no longer treated as first among equals, but us the kid at the far end of the table.  Having trashed America's swagger and replaced it with a lilting prance, Obama learned that it's not so fun to be a relatively young leader of relatively young nation whose prestige has taken a major blow.

From a Wall Street Journal editorial, we see just how far the USA has fallen under Obama's presidency:

Has there ever been a major economic summit where a U.S. President and his Treasury Secretary were as thoroughly rebuffed as they were at this week's G-20 meeting in Seoul? We can't think of one. President Obama failed to achieve any of his main goals while getting pounded by other world leaders for failing U.S. policies and lagging growth.

For Obama, now, there is nowhere to turn.  American voters have rejected his domestic policy. His base has turned against his handling of Afghanistan. The world leaders, seeing him as weak, are planning world economic policy more or less over Obama's head.

Stagflation

But there's more. Obama's economic policies promise to do two things: 1) perpetuate high unemployment and 2) increase inflation.  In fact, the Fed's stated policy, which Obama defended twice in Asia last week, is to use Demand-Pull inflation to grow the US economy.

We've seen this before.  In 1978 to 1982, America suffered a malaise brought about by bone-headed economic policies from a president who believed America had gotten too big for its breeches.  Jimmy Carter's policies produced high unemployment, flat growth, and runaway inflation.  The term for this economic condition is "stagflation."

True, Bernanke is a Bush appointee and the Fed is independent from the White House.  But Treasury Secretary Geithner and President Obama are full participants in an economic policy that threatens to revisit the disastrous years of 1978 through 1982.  Being unemployed, underemployed, or underpaid is bad enough. When the cost of necessary goods and services rise quickly, things get worse fast for the economically challenged.  And signs of stagflation are everywhere.

Alan Reynolds of the Cato Institute wrote in a WSJ op-ed that several inflationary signals surfaced in October:

Producer prices rose at an annual rate of 5.5% in September and 4.8% in August. The broad price index for GDP rose at an annual rate of 2.3% in the third quarter, up from 1.9% in the second quarter and 1% in the first.

For ordinary folks trying to make ends meet, the prospect of inflation is frightening.  Already the weak dollar has driven up the price of gasoline and food—the two things we all need to survive.  The two things the government omits from its consumer price index.  In the past week, gasoline prices in the St. Louis area jumped $0.25 overnight.

The Next Congress

There is little the 112th Congress can do to repair the economic damage, but it can lay the foundation for the next president and the 113th Congress. I encourage all members of the next Congress to follow Arthur Laffer's prescription of extending the Bush tax cuts, repealing Obamacare, eliminating incentives for idleness, and push free trade.

Waiver-mania! The ever-expanding Obamacare escapee list

Sent to you by Jay via Google Reader:

via Michelle Malkin by Michelle Malkin on 11/14/10

Let us briefly review the rapidly growing rolls of companies, unions, and states bursting out of the Obamacare escape hatch.

In early September, I noted the push by Obamacare promoter and Democrat Rep. Ron Wyden for a special state waiver from the very federal mandate he advocated for everyone else.

A few weeks later, McDonald's finagled its own Obamacare waiver after warning federal regulators that it could be forced to drop its affordable health insurance plan for nearly 30,000 restaurant workers unless it got a pass.

In early October, the Obama administration announced it had granted waivers not only to McDonald's, but also to several other firms and labor unions.

Now comes word that Torquemada HHS Secretay Kathleen Sebelius has approved a whopping 111 waivers for businesses of all sizes, along with more unions and other providers of health insurance. The escapees include employers of many low-wage and part-time workers whose health insurance plans would otherwise be dropped, including Darden Restaurants — the parent company of the Olive Garden and Red Lobster and other chains, which employ some 34,000 people.

Among the waivers recently granted were for employers like Darden Restaurants, which operates the Red Lobster and Olive Garden restaurants, for 34,000 of its workers. Federal officials have granted 111 waivers to employers, insurers and union plans, who are responsible for covering about 1.2 million people.

Darden said the waiver would allow it to offer employees access to affordable coverage as the health care law is started.

Also on the list: Carlson Restaurants, which owns T.G.I. Friday's, and hair salon chain Regis Corp:

Without waivers, companies would have to provide a minimum of $750,000 in coverage next year, increasing to $1.25 million in 2012, $2 million in 2013 and unlimited in 2014.

According to HHS, waivers depend on "a series of factors including whether or not a premium increase is large or if a significant number of enrollees would lose access to their current plan because the coverage would not be offered in the absence of a waiver."

Carlson Restaurants and Regis declined interview requests but e-mailed statements.

"Providing competitive health benefits to our team and their family members is a very important priority for us," said Anne Varano, senior vice president for human resources and communication at Minnetonka-based Carlson. "The [Health and Human Services] waiver allowed us to continue providing health benefits to our team members at an affordable cost while giving us additional time to develop longer-term approaches. "

Said a spokesperson at Minneapolis-based Regis Corp.: "Until [health care] reform is further solidified, it is premature to comment."

Also on the list: Dish Networks and more. At this point, the better question is: Who won't be on the list after the Obamacare central planners fully acknowledge the destructive consequences of their schemes?

Aetna, based in Hartford, Connecticut, was part of a first round of waivers in September for 209,423 beneficiaries in plans that don't comply with the new requirement. Oak Brook, Illinois- based McDonald's Corp., the world's largest restaurant chain, Jack in the Box Inc., based in San Diego, and the United Federation of Teachers also were among the waiver recipients.

About 200,000 people were included in the new round of exemptions, bringing the total to almost 1.2 million people, HHS said on its website. Also on the list for exemptions are Manor Care Inc., a nursing-home company owned by Washington-based private equity firm Carlyle Group, and Universal Forest Products Inc., a lumber company based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Spokesmen for Manor and Universal Forest didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

…Dish Network, the Englewood, Colorado-based No. 2 U.S. satellite-television provider, will be given a waiver for 3,597 employees, and Orlando, Florida-based Darden Restaurants, owner of the Olive Garden and Red Lobster chains, will get a waiver for 34,000 workers, according to the HHS list. Darden spokesman Rich Jeffers didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Dish Network spokesman Marc Lumpkin declined to comment.

The waivers, which last for a year and can then be renewed, let workers keep coverage until new options are available in four years under the law, said Jessica Santillo, a spokeswoman for the agency.

The list of most recently approved refugees is here. Make no mistake: Team Obama isn't granting the waivers out of bleeding-heart compassion for the affected workers, but out of a panicked urgency to avoid a public relations disaster.

As I've boiled it down before:

Old Democrat promise: Everyone gets to keep their health insurance.

New Democrat promise: You can keep your health insurance…if you BEG hard enough for an Obamacare waiver.

Yep: The only way for hundreds of thousands of workers to keep their health insurance is to exempt them from the government-imposed "fix."

The Soros monkeys are attacking conservative Obamacare critics as "Republican repeal mongers" — even as the Obama administration concedes failure and continues to approve temporary repeals of the federal mandates to company after company after union after union.

Waiver-mania also comes on the heels of Democrats' own push to repeal the onerous 1099 provisions:

A leading Senate Democrat vowed Friday to introduce legislation killing a part of the new healthcare reform law that imposes new tax-filing requirements on small businesses.

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), chairman of the Finance Committee and a leading architect of the reform law, said a provision requiring businesses to report more purchases to the IRS will impose undue paperwork burdens on companies amid an economic downturn when they can least afford it.

Baucus, who had pushed legislation scaling back the requirement earlier in the year, now wants it repealed in full.

"I have heard small businesses loud and clear and I am responding to their concerns," Baucus said in a statement. "Small businesses are the backbone of our economy in my home state of Montana and across the country, and they need to focus their efforts on creating good-paying jobs — not filing paperwork."

Guess we are all "repeal mongers" now, eh?

Yes, "steal."  Rep. Charles Rangel was not allowed to use money from his leadership PAC to pay his legal bills, it beggars belief that he did not know that he was not allowed to use money from his leadership PAC to pay his legal bills, and yet he did it anyway.  If we can't call the deliberate diversion of money that was raised and allocated for other people's use 'theft' then we might as well give up the entire civilization thing now and go back to living in caves.

It doesn't really matter anyway, of course.  The Democratic panelists on the ethics trial that's supposed to start tomorrow will not sign off on any sort of meaningful punishment for the Congressman: he'll be slapped on the wrist in any Democratic-controlled Congress, and everybody knows it.  That's why current Speaker Pelosi delayed these proceedings in the first place, after all.  On the (marginally) bright side, at least Rangel's been drained personally dry by these proceedings, to the point where he'll be representing himself because he can't afford a new legal team.  It's hardly justice, but then, again: it's still a Democratic-controlled Congress.  You work with what you have.

Mosque Makeovers With Your Tax Dollars

wsbtv.com

Posted: 3:57 pm EST November 11, 2010Updated: 6:42 am EST November 12, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C — A Channel 2 Action News investigation found that the State Department is sending millions of dollars to save mosques overseas. This investment has received criticism as the United States makes an effort to slash nearly $4 trillion in government spending. Plenty of outrage following the announcement made Thursday afternoon by a government commission that suggested huge cuts to the budget, including eliminating the interest education for home mortgage. This juxtaposed with United States investing millions to refurbish mosques as a good-will effort in Muslim countries has upset many taxpayer groups.

The Channel 2 Action News investigation found a 1,300-year-old Egyptian mosque that was almost flooded by contaminated sewer water that is one of many ancient Cairo mosques and churches that were saved from destruction by the U.S. taxpayers.

This is part of a $770 million program to rebuild Cairo's sewer system, paid for by the U.S. State Department's USAID program.

We are spending money we don't have. This is all on a gigantic credit card right now," said Jared Thomas, a taxpayer advocate.

Millions more dollars have been sent to places like Cyprus. The State Department displays before and after pictures of mosques refurbished with U.S. tax dollars.

"I think it is very hard to explain to the American taxpayer right now whose having an extraordinary time paying bills and making ends meet that this is why we took this out of your paycheck, so we can fund this," said Thomas.

The State Department declined a Channel 2 Action News request for an interview. We wanted to ask why are we using tax dollars to refurbish religious buildings overseas. The State Department did send Channel Two Action News an e-mail saying that they are fighting Islamic extremism by building relationships with Islamic leaders.

Egyptian-American human rights activist Nonie Darwish told Channel 2 Action News anchor Justin Farmer that trying to buy respect in the Middle East only shows our weakness.

"This part of the world has a lot of respect for power and America is not showing its power, it's showing its appeasement. They are laughing all the way to the bank," said Darwish.

Darwish was born in Egypt and is now a former Muslim. Darwish told Farmer that she moved to America and has written several books critical of radical Islam. Darwish said that most of the mosques in Egypt are run by extremists who have ordered former Muslims like herself to be killed.

"We are rebuilding mosques to support the radicals, not to support the moderates. We are building mosques to issue fatwas of death against people like me," said Darwish.

Your tax dollars also fund computers and mosques in places like Tajikistan and Mali. At an ancient mud brick mosque in Mali, the State Department has provided Internet service and computer equipment to local imams.

Taxpayer watchdogs wonder how the State Department can explain paying for Internet service while Americans struggle through the worst recession in decades.

"To the average person who has probably seen their paycheck shrink and not grow, this could be an insult to them," said Pete Sepp, President of the National Taxpayers Association.

With radical websites inciting violence and extremism worldwide, there are concerns that the taxpayer-funded Internet service could be misused.

"That is not the job of the U.S. because giving them Internet access to imams and Muslim preachers who hate America," said Darwish.

Critics say that it is time to review funding for all federal programs that do not directly benefit taxpayers.

"We are spending money we don't have and certainly we can cut items like this," said Thomas.

The Deficit Commission announced it would look at slowing the growth of foreign aid. Channel 2 Action News is not aware if there will be cuts in this particular U.S Aid program.

Arming our enemies is not the way to win the war.

Lame-Duck Congressman Removes Hold on Military Aid for Lebanon

A senior U.S. legislator, who will lose his key committee chairmanship position in the new GOP-controlled Congress, has done a last minute U-turn and removed his former opposition to $100 military aid for Lebanon. Several Congress members, as well as Israel, have expressed concerns that the weaponry will end up in the arms of Hizbullah.

House Foreign Affair Committee Democratic chairman Representative Howard Berman said on Friday, "I am reassured as to the nature and purposes of the proposed package. As a result of these assurances, I am lifting the hold on the $100 million spending plan for the Lebanese Armed Forces."

The State Department has backed the aid, arguing that it would serve the interests of Lebanon and the United States. The Hizbullah terrorist organization has widely been noted by observers as having infiltrated deeply into the Lebanese army. Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu said several weeks ago that it is difficult to distinguish between the Lebanese and Hizbullah armies.

Rep. Berman and Democratic colleague Nita Lowey blocked the aid program in August after a Lebanese soldier used an American weapon and killed IDF reserve officer Dov Harar without provocation.  The officer was operating within Israeli territory.

Retired Major-General Giora Eiland said after the attack, "Due to the fact that Hizbullah is the only significant military force north of border, I would not hesitate to think Hizbullah persuaded a Lebanese commander to do something, TIME magazine reported after the incident, in which another IDF officer was wounded.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Washington Post before last week's battle, Defense Minister Barak warned "that the wall between the Lebanese armed forces and Hizbullah—it's quite porous. And whatever you give the Lebanese armed forces might end up in the hands of Hizbullah, be it technology or weapons or whatever."

Berman explained on Friday that the Lebanese army has taken "important steps to prevent a recurrence of dangerous and provocative actions." He said he was assured that military aid would not end up in the Hizbullah terrorist militia. He did not offer details except to say that the Obama administration disclosed classified information in favor of the assistance.

"Improving Lebanon's ability to defend its borders, stop arms trafficking, build institutions and fight terrorist elements is imperative to the security and stability of the region," Matthew Dennis, a spokesman for Lowey, stated.

Final approval may be blocked when the new Congress is sworn into office. Berman is to be replaced by Florida Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who said,  "Unanswered questions remain concerning the long-term impact and long-term strategy of U.S. assistance" to Lebanon,  which she noted is "increasingly influenced by Hizbullah."

Rep. Eric Cantor, the sole GOP member in the House of Representatives and who is slated to be majority leader, said in August, "The days of ignoring the Lebanese Armed Forces' provocations against Israel and the protection of Hizbullah in Southern Lebanon are over. Lebanon cannot have it both ways. If it wants to align itself with Hizbullah against the forces of democracy, stability and moderation, there will be consequences."
(IsraelNationalNews.com) House Foreign Affair Committee Democratic chairman Representative Howard Berman said on Friday, "I am reassured as to the nature and purposes of the proposed package.

The Waivering Obamacare & White House Ignorance Of Main Street America

Obamacare was an ill-conceived half-thought, created by liberal minds with zero comprehension of the private sector and health care. Proof is found in the 111 waivers this inept White House has had to provide to private industry because Obamacare would do more damage than good:

Look, this is not rocket science or brain surgery. But if you need a rocket scientist or brain surgeon you want them to have more than a passing ability to spell the words. This White House is IGNORANT of the private sector. And I mean totally ignorant:

The Democrats running things the past two years proved they have no clue about the business of business. In their world, the real world of the private economy is an abstraction, a political figment.

Exhibit A: Along the road to ObamaCare, the party's planners inserted into the bill the now- famous 1099 provision, requiring businesses to do an IRS report for any transaction over $600 annually. No member of Congress, White House staffer or party flunky thought to say, "Oh, wow, this 1099 requirement will crush people running their own businesses. Are we sure we want to do this?" Yes, and that 1099 fiasco is a metaphor now for the modern Democratic Party.

What in the world is the government going to do with a record of every service and purchase over $600, except hire tens of thousands of people to scan, record and archive this mess. In a $10 trillion a year economy this idiotic rule could produce almost 17 billion records. Government waste taken to a whole new and ridiculous level. The Einsteins in the White House have come up with an answer to their ignorance – they plan to hire a token business person as some fig leaf to cover up their incompetence. Incompetence that cannot be missed in their policies:

It began in early 2009 with the cap-and-trade climate bill. The country was going to have to chow down its provisions no matter how many jobs got lost in Ohio, West Virginia, Michigan and other coal-using states. The bill portended so much damage to businesses in these states that some of the Senate's most liberal members had to beg off supporting it.

At his news conference last week, Mr. Obama still wouldn't rule out the EPA's impending "carbon finding" to regulate emissions, another Freddy Krueger nightmare for the average business.

The private sector is all about business, small and large. Main Street America is the private sector. Which means this White House is clueless about the heart and soul of America. If you don't have a clue about the private sector, you are literally clueless about America.

OMG– This was horrific.
And, this actually occurred in the United States.
TSA screeners accosted a little 3 year-old coming through the airport.

The poor little girl kept screaming, "Quit touching me!"

Did they really think this little girl was packing a bomb?
Really?
