Yesterday, the man many expect to be the new Speaker of the House, Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), made it clear what he and the new Republican majority think the American people have ordered them to do:  "we will repeal Obamacare."

"Trust me, I'm going to make sure this health care bill never, ever, ever is implemented," he said in an interview with Fox News:

The idea was echoed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell Thursday, who said that GOP leaders will fight to repeal Obamacare and that in order to be successful the country must make Obama a one-term president.

In response, the White House said it doesn't believe Americans are sending a policy message, and aren't upset with Obamacare. In the daily press briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that "nothing" from Tuesday's election suggest Americans want to go back to the old health care system.

"I don't think any data suggests that that's what people want to see after Tuesday," he said.

A similar sentiment was trumpeted earlier in the day. Gibbs, in a special online question-and-answer session, said the president's "reading of the election is that we all have to work together to find common ground." Unlike Republicans, he said nothing about policy:

MSNBC‘s Lawrence O’Donnell Admits On-Air: ‘I am a Socialist’

via The Blaze - Stories by Jonathon M. Seidl on 11/5/10

On Friday's "Morning Joe" MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell made a startling admission: "I am a socialist."

The statement from the regular host of "The Last Word" came as he was chiding contributor Glenn Greenwald from Salon.com for apparently being a liberal hiding behind the word "progressive."

"I am a socialist. I live to the extreme left, the extreme left of you mere liberals," he said:

An extended version of the clip shows more of the uncomfortable exchange. It reveals that O'Donnell and Greenwald disagree about why Democrats lost on Tuesday. Greenwald suggests they tried to appear conservative and paid the price, while O'Donnell seems to suggest that the only way liberals and progressives can hold power is if they temper their platforms:

Dozens of Illegal Immigrants Trained at Mass. Flight School

via The Blaze - Stories by Meredith Jessup on 11/5/10

STOW (AP/The Blaze) – The owner of a Massachusetts flight school and more than 30 of his students have been charged with being in the country illegally.

The owner of the TJ Aviation Flight Academy at Minute Man Air Field in Stow and the students received federal clearance to train as pilots despite strict security controls put in place after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Some of the 9-11 terrorists trained in the U.S.

Those arrested are Brazilian.  The school's owner, however, is denying that he is in the U.S. illegally.

A spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration told The Boston Globe that the agency is investigating how supposed illegal immigrants received pilots licenses.

The security breach has also raised fresh terrorism concerns after flight sanctions were tightened after September 11.  Immigration officials stressed Friday that there was no link connecting the two flight school locations and terrorism.  But questions remain after the TSA was ordered in 2004 to verify all foreign nationals enrolled in American flight schools.

"There is currently a review ongoing into the circumstances by which these individuals were issued pilots' licenses," TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

U.S. Gets a Scolding from U.N. Human Rights Council

via The Blaze - Stories by Meredith Jessup on 11/5/10

For the first time on Friday, the United States subjected itself to some harsh criticisms from friends and foes alike among the 47 nations sitting on the United Nations Human Rights Council. The U.S. took the criticism in stride with a high-level delegation of around 30 officials led by Esther Brimmer, the assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs.

Among the chief critics and first in line at the podium to speak out: Cuba, Iran, Russia, North Korea and Venezuela, whose delegates reportedly camped out overnight to secure their spot behind the podium.

Cuban ambassador Rodolfo Reyes Rodriguez called on the U.S. to end its blockade of the island country, calling it a "crime of genocide."  In addition, it condemned the U.S. for "violations against migrants and mentally ill persons" and called on America to "ensure the right to food and health" for all citizens.

Iran's delegation demanded the U.S. "halt serious violations of human rights and humanitarian law including covert external operations by the CIA carried out on pretext of combating terrorism."  The Islamic nation — currently poised to stone a woman for alleged adultery charges — told the United States it needed to "combat violence against women."

North Korea, a dictatorial nation known to starve its own people, told the U.S. "to address inequalities in housing, employment and education" and "prohibit brutality…by law enforcement officials."  The delegation also noted that it was "concerned by systematic widespread violations committed by the United States at home and abroad."

Libya accused the U.S. of systematic "racism, racial discrimination and intolerance."

The criticism didn't only come from America's foes.  Countries like the United Kingdom and France condemned the United States for its allowance of capital punishment.  Still, Assistant Secretary Brimmer told the council that "it is an honor to be in this chamber."

Many of the UNHRC's accusations, however, seem to accurately reflect a characterization of the council's activities offered by former American ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton who warned against joining the council.  According to Bolton, Friday's self-inflicted scolding from the international community underscored the Obama administration's "naivete" toward international diplomacy.

"For the Obama administration, this is an exercise in self flagellation, which they seem to enjoy," Bolton said. "But it doesn't prompt equivalent candor from the real rights abusers."

Meanwhile, the Obama administration defends its decision to voluntary subject the U.S. to such criticisms:

The administration has engaged in an intensive effort, including holding town hall meetings with Muslims, Native Americans, African Americans and other minority groups, to assess the extent of domestic rights violations. In August, it gave the U.N. rights council a 22-page report documenting U.S. abuses, including practices by federal and local police and corrections and immigration officials, and defending President Obama's counter-terrorism policies. Friday's meeting provided the first opportunity for states to comment on the report.

"Our progress has not been linear, but in the story of the United States, the arc of history has bent toward justice," said Michael Posner, assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor. "As our report acknowledges, though we are proud of our achievements, we are not satisfied with the status quo."

That "status quo," according to the Obama administration, has included the United States' "long history of rights abuse."

"For the United States, our early years witnessed profound gaps between our ideals and practice, including slavery, the treatment of Native Americans and limited franchise," Brimmer said. "Yet our own history has been one of progress, built on a strong foundation of fundamental freedoms of speech, association and religion, as foundation for building a 'more perfect Union.'"

Nicaragua's Carlos Robelo Raffone also condemned the U.S. for sins of the past, but insisted America has made little progress. "The United States of America, since its very origin, has used force indiscriminately as the central pillar of its policy of conquest and expansionism, causing death and destruction," Raffone told his U.N. colleagues Friday.  "We would like to forget the past, but unfortunately the United States of America — which pretends to be the guardian of human rights in the world, questioning other countries — has been and continues to be the one which most systematically violates human rights."

But the UNHRC forum was not only an opportunity for America's foreign neighbors to deride the U.S.  Some 300 domestic non-govermental organizations (NGOs) also seized on the opportunity to criticize their own government using the international stage.

Antonio Ginatta of the New York-based group Human Rights Watch told the council the U.S. "grossly" violates its citizens' human rights: "U.S. officials were often reduced to restating current practices that grossly violate human rights, like the death penalty, poor prison conditions and sentencing youth offenders to life without parole."

Further, Amnesty International condemned the U.S. for its use of enhanced interrogation techniques.  "These recommendations must be at the heart of rebuilding the United States' human rights record," it said in a statement.

Appearing on Russia Today from the conference in Geneva, Chandra Bhatnagar of the American Civil Liberties Union also spoke about America's use of "torture" and insisted those who approve and carry out the intelligence-gathering technique must be prosecuted:

In response to these accusations from Americans and other nations, Harold Koh, a U.S. State Department legal adviser told the U.N. council: "Let there be no doubt, the United States does not torture and it will not torture."  And while some countries lambasted the U.S. and the Obama administration for not carrying through on the president's promise to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Koh simply responded that "the president cannot close Guantanamo alone," and any effort to do so would require assistance from Congress, the courts and foreign allies willing to take in released detainees.

Ambassador Bolten isn't alone in criticizing the Obama administration's willingness to expose the country to such criticism, however. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., a Cuban-American congresswoman likely to become the next chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also criticizes the move away from President George W. Bush's precedent of ignoring the UNHRC.  "So long as the inmates are allowed to run the asylum, the Human Rights Council will continue to stand in the way of justice, not promote it," she said in a statement Friday.  "The U.S. should walk out of this rogues' gallery and seek to build alternative forums that will actually focus on abuses and deny membership to abusers."

In the end it was the German delegation — not the American envoy — who most vocally scolded the critics of the U.S.  "We have noted with interest that some of states which are on the first places of today's speakers list had spared no effort to be the first to speak on the U.S.," said Germany's delegate, Konrad Scharinger.  "We would hope that those states will show the same level of commitment when it comes to improving their human rights record at home."

Are You Ready For An Illegal Mexican Immigrant Private Detective TV Series?

I'm not sure I am.  FX has put into the development stage the first major series project centered on an illegal alien character.  A drama about an illegal Mexican immigrant working as a private investigator.

Via Deadline.com -

It is a premise that would no doubt spark controversy. FX has put in development  the first major series project centered on an illegal alien character, a drama from Changing Lanes writer Chap Taylor about an illegal Mexican immigrant working as a private investigator. TV and film director Rodrigo Garcia, born in Colombia, has come on board to direct and executive produce the project, described as "Traffic meets Chinatown." Also executive producing are Taylor, Dawn Parouse & Marti Noxon of Grady Twins and Garcia's frequent collaborator, producer Julie Lynn.

Taylor decided to look for a contemporary counterpart to Marlowe, asking himself: "Who today is on the outer fringes of Los Angeles but sees everything?" The answer – an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

In addition to relying on his own sleuthing skills, by being an illegal immigrant, the PI on the show will be able to tap into a network of other immigrants. "It's an invisible network of people we don't pay attention to who see everything," Taylor said. "They take care of our kids, they mow our lawns, they deliver our food, they mop the floors at our offices, they park our cars. They know if we recycle, and they know if we are cheating on our wives." The PI drama will be dark and authentic, and Taylor stresses that this it not turn into "the immigrant of the week" story.

The project is taking on the hot-button issue of illegal immigration, and Taylor is well aware that it would probably stir controversy and possible accusations that, with an illegal as the hero, the show glorifies people who are in this country illegally. But "in Los Angeles and in the U.S., people's lives are built on the labor of those immigrants," Taylor said.

The timing of this project is interesting.  I would expect to see this series launched sometime next year.  I suspect that immigration will be a very hot topic next year.    Democrats have already said that they hope to divide the Latino vote against the Republicans.  The sympathetic manner in which the creators of this series say they intend to depict illegal immigrants should help to advance the meme that they are all victims.

More Bad News! Obama No Longer “Most Powerful Person On Earth”

http://gatewaypundit.firstthings.com/2010/11/more-bad-news-obama-no-longer-most-powerful-man-in-the-world/
Posted by Lady Liberty on Friday, November 5, 2010, 1:51 PM
And the hits just keep on coming!  As if the news of Tuesday’s midterm elections wasn’t bad enough, Forbes has announced that President Obama has been knocked off the top spot of their annual list of  the “Most Powerful Persons On Earth”.
President Obama Bows To Chinese President Hu Jintao, "The Most Powerful Person On Earth"
President Obama has been replaced by Chinese President Hu Jintao as “The Most Powerful Person On Earth”.  According to Forbes, the prerequisite to be chosen for their list is  “because, in various ways, they bend the world to their will”.
Mr Hu topped their list because, as Forbes wrote, “Unlike Western counterparts, Hu can divert rivers, build cities, jail dissidents and censor internet without meddling from pesky bureaucrats, courts. Recently surpassed Japan to become the world’s second-largest economy both in absolute and purchasing power terms. Credible estimates have China poised to overtake US as world’s largest economy in 25 years – although, crucially, not on a per-capita basis.”
Via The Telegraph -
The annual list, compiled by Forbes, the business magazine, places David Cameron, the British prime minister, at seven, behind Angela Merkel, the German chancellor in the list of 68.
King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al Saud of Saudi Arabia came in third behind Mr Jintao and Mr Obama, while Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister was fourth, ahead of Dmitry Medvedev, who only came in at 12.
Pope Benedict XVI was in fifth place, while the rest of the top 10 was rounded off by Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, Sonia Gandhi, the Indian president, and Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Mr Gates finished ahead of Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, who was in 17th place.
The list, another blow to the US president, cited his party’s poor performance in the midterm elections.
“Obama’s Democrats suffered a mighty blow in US midterm elections, with the president decisively losing support of the House of Representatives, and barely holding onto the Senate. It’s quite a comedown for last year’s most powerful person, who after enacting widespread reforms in his first two years in office will be hard-pressed to implement his agenda in the next two.”
I guess promising that “this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal” wasn’t quite enough for Mr. Obama to maintain his lofty perch.  Hope and change does indeed have an expiration date.

Unreal. Obama Admits Failure… On Message Not On Policy

This would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.

This is crazy.
He just can't admit his Keynesian economic plan was a complete disaster.
What part of 9.6% unemployment rate does he not understand?
The Politico reported:

President Obama says that the idea that he failed to persuade Americans that his major accomplishments would help the country is a "fair argument."

In an interview with "60 Minutes," excerpts of which were published by CBS News on Friday, Obama said "we haven't always been successful" at selling his pitch to voters. "I take personal responsibility for that," he said. "And it's something that I've got to examine carefully … as I go forward."

"I think that, over the course of two years, we were so busy and so focused on getting a bunch of stuff done that we stopped paying attention to the fact that leadership isn't just legislation," Obama said. "That it's a matter of persuading people. And giving them confidence and bringing them together. And setting a tone."

If NPR was right to fire Juan Williams, should MSNBC fire Keith Olbermann? UPDATE: Olbermann suspend

We'll see how this shakes out, but if Keith Olbermann can directly and deliberately violate NBC News policy on campaign contributions and keep his job, it shows an incredible hypocrisy on the part of the media.

MSNBC host Keith Olbermann made campaign contributions to two Arizona members of Congress and failed Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway ahead of Tuesday's election — a potential violation of NBC ethics policies.

Olbermann, who acknowledged the contributions in a statement to POLITICO, made the maximum legal donations of $2,400 apiece to Conway and to Arizona Reps. Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords. He donated to the Arizona pair on Oct. 28 — the same day that Grijalva appeared as a guest on Olbermann's "Countdown" show.

You will recall that NPR fired Juan Williams for merely stating an honest opinion about his feelings towards Muslims when getting on a plane.  NPR's problem with Williams was apparently not what he said, but where he said it—on a Fox News broadcast of the O'Reilly Factor.

Olbermann's transgression appears much more severe.  NBC's policy on political contributions is clear.  You don't do it unless you get clearance from the top.  Olbermann apparently didn't.

Should he keep his job?

UPDATE: Indefinitely Suspended

When Chris Matthews Had a "Man Crush" on Glenn Beck: MUST WATCH VIDEO

Back in 2005 Glenn Beck was on a tour promoting his book "The Real America: Messages from the Heart and Heartland" One of his stops was on Hardball, the MSNBC show hosted by Chris Matthews.  Yesterday on the Web Video News Show The BCast, One of the show's hosts, Scott Baker (Managing Editor of the Blaze) mentioned that appearance from long ago, which after a little digging appears below.

The interview took place before MSNBC changed its format from News to Progressive Propaganda and before Glenn Beck added a TV show to his radio duties. That what makes the video so interesting. Matthews gushes over Glenn Beck during the interview, yes that's the same Chris Matthews who has nothing but vitriol for Beck now. Matthews opinions were left wing but they seemed more moderate than they are today, possibly because he had to adapt to the progressive format.

As for Glenn Beck, the interview could have been given today.  Headline News and Fox have not made him change his opinions the way MSNBC may have with Matthews.  The discussion covers his mistrust of Big Government, his warning about both political parties caring only about the status quo, and the failings of the mainstream media.

The video below teaches us a little bit about who really has the courage of his convictions, versus who adapts his opinions to please management.

Labor Force Participation Rate Drops To 25 Year Low, At 64.5%

Tyler Durden's picture

The inverse silver lining to today's jobs report that will be lost in the shuffle of what is perceived as a good NFP (despite consistent initial jobless claims of around 450K, which means that either there is a massive data error, or the rate of job creation has somehow surged) is that labor force participation has now dropped to the lowest rate it has been since 1984, at 64.5%. Assuming a reversion to the long-term average participation rate of 66%, means that the civilian labor force is in reality 157.4 million as opposed to the disclosed 153.9 million, a delta of 3.5 million currently unaccounted for. Maybe someone can ask the president during his imminent press conference what happened to the unemployed population, which would have been 18.3 if this labor force delta was incorporated, resulting in an unemployment rate of 11.6%.

New GOP House Judiciary Chair Promises Several Investigations to Hold Admini...

The New GOP House Judiciary Chairman, Lamar Smith, promises a number of investigations to hold the Obama Administration accountable.
WOAI reported, via Drudge:

The San Antonio Congressman who is in line to become chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee is promising 'a number of investigations and oversight committee actions' which he vows will 'hold the administration accountable,' 1200 WOAI news reports.

Veteran Republican Lamar Smith, a Yale graduate and social conservative who grew up in the brush country of south Texas which is now transit point for illegal immigrants and drugs, said in a news conference that a number of issues will come into the sights of his committee when he takes the chairmanship in January, from cracking down on child pornography to taking the Obama Administration to task for failing to do enough to protect the southern border.

Smith says it is his Constitutional duty.

"Part of that checks and balances is in fact holding the administration accountable, is in fact insisting on more transparency, is insisting on more honesty, and getting the facts," Smith said. "Right now, because of the one party monopoly, the Administration has been able to dodge any kind of supervision, any kind of oversight committee action, and they refuse to testify, and that is no longer acceptable."

Smith, 63, says he says he has spoken to Speaker-designate John Boehner and has been told that he will move to the chairmanship of the committee. He has been ranking Republican on the committee for four years, and also headed the House Ethics Committee during the previous Republican majority.

John Boehner: “There Seems to Be Some Denial On the Part of the President”

via Gateway Pundit by Jim Hoft on 11/5/10

That's putting it nicely…
GOP Leader John Boehner told Diane Sawyer that Obama appears to be in some denial about the message that was sent by the American people.
The Washington Post reported:

Rep. John Boehner, likely to be the next speaker of the House, is on the interview circuit. On Thursday, he sat down with ABC's Diane Sawyer and discussed a variety of topics, from his position on the Bush tax cuts and his relationship with President Obama to his personal history and his tendency to get emotional.

Asked whether he had seen Obama's press conference Wednesday after the Democratic Party had lost the House, Boehner said no. "But I've read a little bit about it," he added. "And there seems to be some denial on the part of the president, and other Democrat leaders. The message that was sent by the American people. When you have the most historic election in over 60-70 years, you would think that the other party would understand that the American people have clearly repudiated the policies that they put forward the last two years."

Boehner has often said his relationship with the president is respectful. Asked what his first sentence would be when he next sees Obama, Boehner said, " 'Hello. Nice to see you.' Now, listen, I have no personal animosity at all towards the president. I get along well with him. And while we disagree, we try to do it in a way that's — neither one of us are disagreeable."

The US unemployment rate has not fallen below 9.0% for over a year now. This is unprecedented.

Fail. The unemployment rate remained at 9.6 in October making Barack Obama the worst jobs president since the Great Depression.
The AP reported:

Employers added the most jobs in five months in October, with the education and health care sectors leading the way.

But the unemployment rate, measured by a separate survey of households, remained stuck at 9.6 percent for the third straight month.

The Labor Department said Friday its survey of employers showed a net gain of 151,000 jobs last month, the most since May. Wall Street analysts expected a smaller gain.

Private employers hired 159,000 workers, while governments at all levels shed only 8,000 jobs, a much better showing than September's sharp drop.
