Election Hail Mary: Obama Finally Discovers ‘By Their Creator’

On the campaign trail in the past few weeks, whenever President Obama quoted (more like paraphrased as it turned out) from the Declaration of Independence, he omitted "by their creator" as being the source that endows us with our unalienable rights. This left the onlooker free to decide for him or herself who exactly endows them their rights — be it a tree, a god, 1972 Buick Skylark, or most importantly, a generous and all-knowing, all caring, all-giving federal government.

However, similar to the old saying "there are no atheists in foxholes," being on the verge of an election slaughter has its way of getting politicians to re-focus on the Creator:

Now, just a few days later, Obama is still on the trail, but he has changed his speech. At rallies in California and Nevada Friday, he included "Creator" in his remarks on the Declaration. "They said in their Declaration, 'We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal,'" Obama said at a rally at the University of Southern California, "'that we are all endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.'" Later, at a Las Vegas rally for Sen. Harry Reid, Obama said, "'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.'"

Suddenly, the "Creator" has appeared in the president's speeches. And each time he discussed the Declaration, "Creator" included, his quotations were met with enthusiastic applause. Barack Obama has learned that Americans like to be reminded of their founding documents — even the passage that explains the ultimate source of those inalienable rights.

It's not yet clear if Obama intentionally decided to include "by their Creator," if the guy who types the words into the teleprompter decided it would be a good idea, or if the inclusion is a desperate attempt by the president to distance himself from MSNBC with the election just over a week away.

If things on November 2nd go as badly for Democrats as it appears they might, time will tell if "by their Creator" will remain intact, or dismissed like a Slurpee-sippin' wingnut who drove the car into the ditch.
