Yesterday, the man many expect to be the new Speaker of the House, Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), made it clear what he and the new Republican majority think the American people have ordered them to do: "we will repeal Obamacare."
"Trust me, I'm going to make sure this health care bill never, ever, ever is implemented," he said in an interview with Fox News:
The idea was echoed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell Thursday, who said that GOP leaders will fight to repeal Obamacare and that in order to be successful the country must make Obama a one-term president.
In response, the White House said it doesn't believe Americans are sending a policy message, and aren't upset with Obamacare. In the daily press briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that "nothing" from Tuesday's election suggest Americans want to go back to the old health care system.
"I don't think any data suggests that that's what people want to see after Tuesday," he said.
A similar sentiment was trumpeted earlier in the day. Gibbs, in a special online question-and-answer session, said the president's "reading of the election is that we all have to work together to find common ground." Unlike Republicans, he said nothing about policy:
