Here comes the Obama regime thought police

from USACTION NEWS

Here comes the Obama regime thought police: "

FCC Commissioner Michael Copps says to bolster “traditional media,” the FCC should conduct a “public value test” of every commercial broadcast station at re-licensing time. Programming must pass government ‘test’ or no license.

By Susan Jones at CNSNews.com

EXCERPTS:

“If a station passes the Public Value Test, it of course keeps the license it has earned to use the people’s airwaves,” Copps said. “If not, it goes on probation for a year, renewable for an additional year if it demonstrates measurable progress. If the station fails again, give the license to someone who will use it to serve the public interest.”

Although Copps has said the FCC will not reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, his prescription for “testing” commercial broadcast stations (see below) will alarm defenders of free speech and free enterprise.

What is the Congressional Review Act? Political ninjitsu, that's what

from theblogprof

What is the Congressional Review Act? Political ninjitsu, that's what: "
This is NOT how govt is supposed to work!
Ed Morrissey posted on the Congressional Review Act just the other day. To be honest, I never heard of it before I read Ed's post. It is a little-known act passed during the Clinton administration that allows Congress to basically veto any regulation put forth by executive branch agencies like the FDA, USDA, DOE, EPA, etc. Why is this important? Because the GOP took the House, cut the Democrat Senate majority in the Senate, and therefore Obama will try to pass turd sandwiches like cap and trade through unaccountable bureaucrats in said agencies bypassing Congress altogether. The news that this Act exists and the GOP will use it is nothing short of political ninjitsu. From The Politico:
GOP lawmakers say they want to upend a host of Environmental Protection Agency rules by whatever means possible, including the Congressional Review Act, a rarely used legislative tool that allows Congress to essentially veto recently completed agency regulations.

The law lets sponsors skip Senate filibusters, meaning Republicans don’t have to negotiate with Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for a floor vote or secure the tricky 60 votes typically needed to do anything in the Senate.

The House doesn’t have the same expedited procedures, but it’s assumed the GOP majority would have little trouble mustering the votes needed to pass disapproval resolutions.

A spate of contentious EPA rules that are soon to be finalized could be prime targets, including the national air quality standard for ozone, toxic emission limits for industrial boilers and a pending decision about whether to regulate coal ash as hazardous waste.

“We’re not going to let EPA regulate what they’ve been unable to legislate. And if I’m chairman, we’re going to have a very aggressive, proactive schedule,” Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), the likely incoming chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, told POLITICO.
I don't trust Fred 'ban the lightbulb' Upton any farther than I can throw him. There really is nothing like voter repudiation at the ballot box to scare Congresscritters into action though.

Unemployment jumps to 9.8%, 16th straight months above 9.5%, 19th straight above 9%

from theblogprof

Unemployment jumps to 9.8%, 16th straight months above 9.5%, 19th straight above 9%: "Can we now officially call the stimulus a failure? It has made the problem worse, not better. Keep in mind that in October of 2006 — just before the Democrats took Congress — unemployment was 4.4%. We have now been above 9.5% for 16 straight months. Still going the wrong way thanks to hopey changy at the wheel:
So much for the recovery summer. Or a recovery fall. Of course, the AP doesn't dwell on the fact that the unemployment rate is essentially 10% for almost a year and a half. They only mention such things at the end of articles, if at all. They are still highlighting the small growth in jobs that isn't even enough to match the population growth. As a matter of fact, a 100,000 jobs growth in a month is the breakeven point to match jobs with children growing into working age. Anything under 100,000 is a net loss of jobs. From the AP via The Detroit News: Jobless rate rises to 9.8 percent as job growth slows
The nation's unemployment rate climbed to 9.8 percent in November, a seven-month high, as hiring slowed.

Employers added only 39,000 jobs last month, a sharp decline from the 172,000 created in October. The weakness was widespread. Retailers, factories, construction companies, financial firms and the government all cut jobs last month.

Private companies — the backbone of the economy — created 50,000 jobs. That was down significantly from the 160,000 private-sector jobs created in October and was the smallest gain since January.

With hiring so weak, the unemployment rate rose from 9.6 percent to 9.8 percent. The jobless rate has now topped 9 percent for 19 straight months, the longest stretch on record.
Obama promised the unemployment rate would not exceed 8% if Congress gave him a $1.2 trillion (including interest) slush fund in the form of the stimulus boondoggle:
In the bigger picture, Obama promised that 3.5 million NEW private-sector jobs will be created by the $1.2 trillion stimulus bill ($800 billion + interest over 10 years since the US is bankrupt) by 2010. Instead, more than 3 million jobs have been lost. Here is what has been happening with Biden's 3-letter word since last year:
January US jobs lost: 598,000 jobs
February US jobs lost: 706,000 jobs
March US jobs lost: 742,000 jobs
April US jobs lost: 545,000 jobs
May US jobs lost: 345,000 jobs
June US jobs lost: 467,000 jobs
July US jobs lost: 247,000 jobs
August US jobs lost: 216,000 jobs
September US jobs lost: 263,000 jobs
October US jobs lost: 190,000 jobs
November US jobs lost: 11,000 jobs
December US jobs lost: 85,000 jobs
January US jobs lost: 20,000
February US jobs lost: 30,000
March US jobs lost: -162,000
April US jobs lost: -290,000
May US jobs lost: -431,000
June US jobs lost: 125,000
July US jobs lost: 131,000
August US jobs lost: 54,000
September US jobs lost: 95,000
October US jobs lost: -151,000
November US jobs lost: -39,000

Total US jobs lost under Obama: 3,797,000 jobs
3.8 million fewer jobs to lose, and that's neglecting the corrections that were made to the jobs numbers from last year that showed even bigger losses. Recall that the stimulus package was supposed to stop the unemployment rate at 8%! A crisis could become a calamity? Remember that? Here's how that looks (via Michael's Comments):
Note that the blue lines are the numbers that Obama's team came up with. So the actual unemployment rate is not only worse that what would happen with porkulus, but even worse than was predicted without it. The stimulus bill was and is a fraud perpetrated by Obama on the American people to pay back his union hacks that got him elected. Nothing more, nothing less.

Michelle Obama doesn't want you to have bake sales...

from Adrienne's Corner

Michelle Obama doesn't want you to have bake sales...: "I think this is absolutely hysterically funny. Really! Another case of "we have to pass the bill to see what's in the bill." And why is it funny? Because the majority of teachers (union members, doncha know) voted for Obama. The jokes on them...
A child nutrition bill on its way to President Barack Obama — and championed by the first lady — gives the government power to limit school bake sales and other fundraisers that health advocates say sometimes replace wholesome meals in the lunchroom.
[...]"This could be a real train wreck for school districts," Lucy Gettman of the National School Boards Association said Friday, a day after the House cleared the bill. "The federal government should not be in the business of regulating this kind of activity at the local level."

Hold the brownies! Bill could limit bake sales

The Full Cost of the Drilling Moratorium

from The Greenroom

The Full Cost of the Drilling Moratorium: "

While the original story of the new drilling moratorium was covered here at Hot Air, the new unemployment numbers which came out this week highlight an even more disturbing aspect of this proposal by the administration. Jack Gerard of the American Petroleum Institute (API) sent out a rather graphic warning to President Obama on Wednesday which laid out the danger of such a decision.

Jack Gerard warned that the administration’s decision today not to allow offshore drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic and the Pacific in the government’s next five-year drilling plan could result in the loss of tens of thousands of American jobs, billions less in government revenues and an increasing dependence on foreign energy sources.

In a longer study compiled by API, some of the alarming facts and figures are brought to light.

Potential Jobs from Energy Exploration

By 2020, these jobs could have grown nation-wide to more than 57,000

Also by 2020, government could have reached annual revenue collection exceeding $3.8 billion and still rising. By extending a moratorium on these areas which have been held off limits for decades, Americans are denied benefits such as these from this valuable economic activity.

But even this doesn’t tell the full story. Retreating on this front will impact far more than the direct jobs and revenue involved in energy exploration. As this story shows, the industry stretches out to provide opportunities far from the actual oil rigs. A prime example is that of Thomas Clements, who operates a business manufacturing machine parts for equipment used in energy exploration. He’s been struggling with government energy policy and its effect on his operation for some time now and went to petition his government for redress of grievances back in August.

At that time, thanks to the deepwater drilling moratorium, Clements, who co-owns a small business that produces metal parts for oilfield equipment, had no income. Not quite three months later, Clements still lives on his savings — and business is down by 54 percent for the year.

“Right now, we’re living off savings and that’s it,” he said Monday on a conference call. “It’s everything we’ve saved up. We’ve worked our entire lives to get to this point. … We were supposed to be in the black this year. We’re definitely still in the red and, in the future, we’re not too sure what it looks like even though the moratorium is lifted.”

Until the Interior Department begins to issue permits at a higher rate, Clements said, his business prospects will remain uncertain. While the drilling moratorium technically applied only to deepwater drilling, the Interior Department’s permits for shallow water drilling slowed, too — by 53 percent. The department has yet to pick up the pace. It continues to issue 3.8 fewer shallow-water drilling permits a month than it did the year leading up to the oil spill. No new deepwater permits have been issued since May.

This “permitorium” as it is being called is hitting people across a number of industries and the service sector as well. Even in spaces where drilling is not being expressly forbidden, the government is dragging its feet on the issuance of new permits bringing a large swath of economic activity – along with the corresponding jobs which might be produced – to a screeching halt.

The last gulf oil spill was bad news, no doubt. And it serves as a reminder that we must continue to work to increase safety and containment measures. But it does nothing to alleviate our need for both domestic energy resources in an uncertain global climate and the jobs that come from such endeavors. Let’s hope the next Congress can talk some sense into those currently holding opportunity in check.

UN Delegates Start Off Junk Science Meeting With Prayer to Mayan Goddess

from The Gateway Pundit

UN Delegates Start Off Junk Science Meeting With Prayer to Mayan Goddess: "

Figures.

UN delegates praise Ixchel at start of junk science meeting.

Bless us, Oh Ixchel.

The Washington Post reported:

With United Nations climate negotiators facing an uphill battle to advance their goal of reducing emissions linked to global warming, it’s no surprise that the woman steering the talks appealed to a Mayan goddess Monday.

Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, invoked the ancient jaguar goddess Ixchel in her opening statement to delegates gathered in Cancun, Mexico, noting that Ixchel was not only goddess of the moon, but also “the goddess of reason, creativity and weaving. May she inspire you — because today, you are gathered in Cancun to weave together the elements of a solid response to climate change, using both reason and creativity as your tools.”

She called for “a balanced outcome” which would marry financial and emissions commitments from industrialized countries aimed at combating climate change with “the understanding of fairness that will guide long-term mitigation efforts.”

Didn’t global warming wipe out the Mayans the first time?

So how exactly is Ixchel supposed to help out now?

Barack Obama is the worst jobs president since the Great Depression.

ABC reported:

One year and two days after President Obama appeared before an audience at West Point and told the nation he was sending 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, he has come to meet with troops in the war-torn country for his second visit as commander-in-chief — where he is being greeted by bad weather and storms of an altogether different kind.

The rough winds and dark clouds could symbolize the challenges the president and his team face here, as the war — now in its 10th year — risks being undermined by a corrupt government, a strong insurgency, leaks of classified cables, waning public support and shifting political winds.

it doesn’t look like things are any better over there.

Good grief.

Dem Senator: “Negotiating With Republicans Is Almost Like Negotiating With Terrorists” (Video)

from The Gateway Pundit

Dem Senator: “Negotiating With Republicans Is Almost Like Negotiating With Terrorists” (Video): "

That’s weird.

Democrats love negotiating with evil dictators and terrorists.

Now their comparing negotiations with Republicans to negotiations with terrorists?

It’s so confusing.

Lib Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) said negotiating with Republicans is almost like negotiating with terrorists.

The Note reported:

ABC News’ Jonathan Karl reports: Did Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) just compare Republicans to terrorists?

Well, not really. But he did compare negotiating with Republicans to negotiating with terrorists.

At a press conference with fellow Democrats, Menendez lashed out at Republicans for opposing Democratic efforts to extend the Bush tax cuts for the middle class while allowing the tax cuts for the wealthy to expire.

He accused the Republicans of holding middle class tax cuts “hostage” to tax cuts for the wealthy. That’s a common Democratic line, but Menendez took the analogy a step further.

Asked if Democrats have a responsibility to move forward with a bill that can become law – in other words, a bill Republicans will support and not block– here’s what Menendez said:

“Do you allow yourself to be held hostage and get something done for the sake of getting something done, when in fact it might be perverse in its ultimate results? It’s almost like the question of do you negotiate with terrorists.”

Republicans are crying foul.

“It’s astounding that Senators from New York and New Jersey would compare people who want to prevent a tax increase to terrorists.” said Brad Dayspring, spokesperson for incoming House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. “. In the 10 seconds it took to utter the phrase, they effectively revealed why people don’t trust Democrats on issues of fiscal or national security. They just don’t get it.”

Feds Are Warrantlessly Tracking Americans’ Credit Card Use in Real Time

Not only are the feds using naked scanners and groping your little boy and 80 year-old nuns at airports and bus stations but they are watching your credit card purchases without warrants.
But, it's all OK because Barack Obama is in the White House.

A new document released under a government sunshine request shows that federal law enforcement officials have been traking Americans' credit card use without warrants.
Wired News reported:

Federal law enforcement agencies have been tracking Americans in real-time using credit cards, loyalty cards and travel reservations without getting a court order, a new document released under a government sunshine request shows.

The document, obtained by security researcher Christopher Soghoian, explains how so-called "Hotwatch" orders allow for real-time tracking of individuals in a criminal investigation via credit card companies, rental car agencies, calling cards, and even grocery store loyalty programs. The revelation sheds a little more light on the Justice Department's increasing power and willingness to surveil Americans with little to no judicial or Congressional oversight.

For credit cards, agents can get real-time information on a person's purchases by writing their own subpoena, followed up by a order from a judge that the surveillance not be disclosed. Agents can also go the traditional route — going to a judge, proving probable cause and getting a search warrant — which means the target will eventually be notified they were spied on.

The document suggests that the normal practice is to ask for all historical records on an account or individual from a credit card company, since getting stored records is generally legally easy.
