Good grief: Man caught with $50k in heroin at Detroit Metro Airport, claims it's for ailing grandmother: "Remember back a few years when Pittsburgh Steelers running back Bam Morris was caught with something like 7 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of his car and he didn't want to get convinced of being a dealer or mule so he claimed it was all for personal use? Well this story goes something like that. An overseas flight comes into Detroit Metro and customs finds $50k worth of heroin on a man. So he claims it's for personal use. Not for him but for his dear, sick grandmother who apparently needs to shoot up like a fiend. From MLive:

A 53-year-old Oklahoma man says $50,000 worth of heroin found during a customs inspection at Detroit Metropolitan Airport was intended as a pain reliever for his ailing grandmother.

Federal authorities say Stevan Patong Thao was arrested after arriving about noon Sunday on a flight that originated in Laos and stopped in Narita, Japan.

Thao was caught transporting two pill bottles containing 490 heroin capsules. Thao said he had a prescription for the illegal drugs, then said his nephew bought them in Laos and were intended for his diabetes and high blood pressure. Authorities say both stories were false.

AN RAF veteran told yesterday how he was battered in the street by two thugs who shouted: “Death to soldiers”.

Anthony O’Brien, 69, was head-butted and punched to the ground by the men.

The pair then fled. Grandad Mr O’Brien – who had been wearing his RAF blazer and a Remembrance poppy – was treated in hospital for bruising to his face and an injured nose. He said: “The yobs who did this to me are nothing but cowardly scum.”

Father-of-two Mr O’Brien, who served in the Sixties, was attacked walking home from the pub in Fallowfield, Manchester, where he and pals had discussed arrangements for an old colleague’s funeral. He said: “I saw these two lads and, as I got near, they started shouting and swearing.

“They were shouting, ‘F****** shoot all you bastards and blow your soldiers up. Death to all soldiers.’ I was scared.

“I was wearing my RAF blazer and poppy – I wear it regularly because it’s smart and I’m proud of it. I thought they were drunk or something. I told them to leave me alone but the little fella hit me on the side of my head.

“Then the other fella head-butted me. Then they ran away.”

The attack has left him in a wheelchair with heart trouble and breathing problems.

An Iraq War veteran and his wife were beaten outside a movie theater by a mob of teens after they told them to quiet down during the movie.



Iraq war veteran Federico Freire and wife, Kalyn, pictured above were attacked Saturday outside a movie theater in Bradenton, Fla., by a group of unruly teenagers. (FoxNews.com).

It was their first date out since his return home from the Iraq War.

FOX News reported:

He was an Iraq war veteran home on leave in time for Christmas. She was looking forward to a night out with her husband after so much time apart.

But a group of teenagers had other plans for Federico and Kalyn Freire, who were assaulted outside a Florida movie theater after asking the teens to be quiet during a movie on Christmas Day.

Federico Freire, a 28-year-old Marine, and Kalyn Freire were attacked after the couple attended a showing of “Little Fockers” on Saturday in Bradenton, Fla.

“The saddest part about it was that this was our first date night together in a long time,” Freire’s wife, Kalyn, said in an interview Wednesday with FoxNews.com. “We were just looking to spend some time together.”

Freire, a Florida native stationed at Camp Pendelton in California, said he and his wife asked a group of “obnoxiously loud” teenagers talking on cell phones to “be quiet” during the 8:20 p.m. movie.

Freire said that when the disturbance escalated and the group began cursing, his wife called the manager, who asked several of the teenagers to leave the theater.

The couple said they thought the fracas was over until they walked out of the theater and were assaulted by a mob of menacing teenagers.

“On our way out of the movie theater, my wife gets surrounded with about 10 to 15 girls that were about to attack her,” Freire told FoxNews.com. “As soon as I saw this I immediately ran and got her out of harm’s way.”

Freire said he was kicked and punched as he and his wife tried to run from the group.

When they were asked to be quiet, some of teens began cussing. Later outside the theater, Freire looked over at his wife and saw a young male with his shirt off punch her in the face, knocking her out.

UPDATE: According to a police report, three others — 16-year-old Ishmael D., 17-year-old Reginald G. and 20-year-old Destiny McNeil — were arrested and charged with felony battery on a law enforcement officer and trespassing.

Scotland’s wind farms froze up in the record freeze this month forcing the government to rely on power from French nuclear plants.

The Scotsman reported:

SCOTLAND’S wind farms are unable to cope with the freezing weather conditions – grinding to a halt at a time when electricity demand is at a peak, forcing the country to rely on power generated by French nuclear plants.

Output from major wind farms fell to as low as 2.5 per cent of their potential generation capacity during the cold snap as power demand rose to close to the highest level yet recorded, new figures have revealed.

Meteorologists say extremely cold temperatures can occur only when there is little or no wind and icy pockets of air are trapped close to the ground, prompting accusations from anti- wind-farm campaigners that wind power cannot be relied on to meet Scotland’s electricity needs in the depths of winter.

The data, charted on the Balancing Mechanism Reporting System website, which the National Grid uses to monitor UK power generation, also revealed that at times when wind energy was at its lowest, back-up power had to be piped in from France, where the majority of electricity is nuclear-generated.

The Scottish Government is opposed to nuclear power, insisting no nuclear plants will be built in Scotland once Hunterston B in Ayrshire and Torness in East Lothian are decommissioned, in 2016 and 2023 respectively.

Over the past ten days, when temperatures have plunged across Scotland, the average power generation from Britain’s wind developments – the majority of which are in Scotland – was 261 megawatts (MW), just 10.75 per cent of the total possible of 2,430MW.

Last Monday and Tuesday afternoon wind production fell to a major low while electricity usage peaked close to its highest level.

The Scottish Government said there was no need to import electricity during the worst of the cold snap even though wind energy plummeted to almost nothing.

Don’t Buy Politico’s False Choice on Nuclear Power

One of the repeating story lines the lamestream media is looking to advance for the 112th Congress is the fictional contradiction between Tea Party small government convictions and the necessity of big government intervention to cause economic growth. Today's contribution comes from Politico's Darius Dixon who asks, "Can the tea party go nuclear?"

The premise of the piece is that conservative plans to jump start nuclear power plant construction conflict with Tea Party plans to shrink the size and role of the federal government since today's nuclear power industry is dependent on federal loan guarantees. This is two thirds right. Yes, the Tea Party does want to "to cut spending and pull back the hand of government." Yes, the nuclear power industry "depends on subsidies, loan guarantees and other federal funds." But that doesn't mean that more federal loan guarantees and subsidies are the only way to revive our domestic nuclear power industry. In fact, expanding the existing loan guarantee program would simply remove incentives to decrease costs, stifle innovation, suppress private-sector financing solutions.

The best policy for reviving our nuclear power industry is completely consistent with a Tea Party vision of governing. Specifically, the federal government should: limit the loan subsidies of Energy Policy Act of 2005 to existing law; avoid creating a government-dependent nuclear industry; remain committed to scientific conclusion on Yucca Mountain; introduce market principles into nuclear waste management reform; and focus the government on key responsibilities like establishing predictable and effective regulation that will ensure safety and security.

The World Powers Up While America Powers Down

The Wall Street Journal reports: "The global oil industry, far from chastened by the catastrophic spill in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, is planning record spending next year, including a large amount for deep-water development. … Barclays estimates spending on new wells, producing platforms and other energy infrastructure will total $490 billion next year, up 11% from 2010. The figure is based on a survey of 402 companies. In part, the planned spending increases reflect the higher costs for finding and extracting oil in harder-to-access areas."

And where are these investment dollars going? More WSJ:

Chevron, which announced a 29% increase in spending earlier this month, cited a desire to develop several large, offshore projects in Western Australia, the South China Sea … Rio de Janeiro-based Petroleo Brasiliero SA is expected to budget $28.2 billion for capital costs, the most of any company, according to Barclays. The lion's share is slated for development of its recently discovered deep-water oil fields off Brazil's Atlantic coast.

Twenty five new deep-water rigs came out of shipyards this year– and another 35 are expected in 2011. A moratorium stopped deep-water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico for five months and new drilling is still slow to get approved. But activity in other parts of the globe continues largely unabated.

So while the Obama administration has slowed energy development in the Gulf of Mexico to a crawl, and banned all energy development in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, the rest of the world is developing their natural resources at a break neck pace.

This is the worst of both worlds for the American consumer. Energy markets are global, so as developing nations drive up the price of energy worldwide, American consumers will suffer. Meanwhile, America's energy industry will not be able to benefit from those rising prices because of big government regulations prevent them from developing our natural resources. Higher prices, less investment, fewer jobs, higher unemployment: that is the Obama energy policy.
