A squad of cops in bulletproof vests swooped into an upper Manhattan park and charged seven men with the 'crime' of playing chess in an area off-limits to adults unaccompanied by kids -- even though no youngsters were there.

'Is chess really something that should be considered a threat to the neighborhood?' Inwood resident and mom Joanne Johnson wrote Mayor Bloomberg, the City Council and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly after the raid.

'This incident is an embarrassment to the officers from the 34th Precinct who felt that it was necessary to use their badge and authority to issue such a random summons.'

All 7 seven illegal chess players got desk-appearance tickets. In America! The Police said the rule protects kids from pedophiles or others who might want to harm them. And from chess players:

'They treated us like drug dealers. All we were doing was playing chess.'

An update on my post from earlier this month: Good News: FED to buy $1 trillion for bonds with money we don't have to make economy look better than it really is. This is called 'quantitative easing.' Or as we call in in the real world 'printing money.' This of course has the effect of devaluing the dollar and bringing about hypoerinflation. But don't worry, because Obama says he doesn't mean to do it. From the AP via The Detroit News: Obama: Fed action not designed to weaken dollar. But it's going to and our community organizer-in-chief darned well knows it.

Staking his ground in the global fight over the world's major currencies, President Barack Obama today disputed claims that the U.S. was deliberately weakening the dollar while accusing China of manipulating its yuan.

Obama said the decision by the Federal Reserve to pump $600 billion into the U.S. economy was designed to give a boost to a slow recovery and address fears of deflation. Germany and other members of the Group of 20 of the largest economies meeting here this week have complained that the infusion of cash will devalue the dollar and hurt their exports to the United States.

The Obama Administration plans to withdraw National Guards troops from the US border in February.

The Washington Examiner reported:

The Obama Administration plans to withdraw National Guard troops from the Texas, New Mexico and California borders by the end February under a new Southwest security plan, even as turmoil in Mexican border cities grows, according to documents obtained by The Washington Examiner.

A letter sent to various members of the Texas Congressional delegation from Texas’ Gov. Rick Perry’s office says, “In February, 2011, the Texas, New Mexico, and California National Guard forces that were deployed to the border in September, 2010, under President’s Obama’s Southwest Border Augmentation Plan, will have 30 days to complete a total draw down of forces.”

The roughly 550 troops will have the month of February to redeploy back to their units, Texas Congressman Ted Poe told The Examiner. Troops would not be pulled off the Arizona border under the plan, and about 100 of the troops would re-deploy there from other states, officials said.

Poe received the letter today. His office confirmed with Department of Homeland Security officials that the plan came from the administration.

“I’m surprised the president would so quickly remove troops from Texas. They’re not supposed to leave until July,” said Poe.

A TSA agent was arrested this year for raping a 14 year-old.

The TSA agent was sending the child text messages.

WHDH reported:

A Transportation Security Administration worker at Logan International Airport is accused of assaulting a 14-year-old girl.

Sean Shanahan, 45, of Winthrop is being held on $50,000 cash bail following his arraignment in East Boston District Court. He is charged with statutory rape, enticement of a child and indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older.

He has also been ordered not to contact the victim or any minors.

Winthrop Police said this all started when a father contacted them about sexually explicit text messages on his daughter’s cell phone.

Shanahan reportedly began contact with the girl in January.

The liberal Center for American Progress doesn’t believe significant GOP gains in the House and Senate should stop the president from implementing more of his polices. The group released a report Tuesday suggesting ways Obama can bypass Congress to accomplish a progressive agenda, and it cites the president’s power as commander-in-chief to make its point.

“I think most of the conversation since the election has been about how President Obama adjusts to the new situation on Capitol Hill,” Center for American Progress head and former Bill Clinton Chief of Staff John Podesta told the Daily Caller. “While that’s an important conversation, it simply ignores the president’s ability to use all levels of his power and authority to move the country forward.”

How does one “move the country forward”? In the center’s report, Podesta explains that Obama can use executive orders, rulemaking, and even the armed forces “to accomplish important change” and that such means “should not be underestimated.”

What exactly does Podesta think the president should use such powers to “accomplish”? Among others, the report suggests “job creation,“ ”quality affordable health care,“ ”sustainable security,“ and ”a clean energy future.”

The report cites specific goals such as mitigating the effects of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, supporting a Palestinian state, and reducing greenhouse gasses by 17 percent by 2020.

“The U.S. Constitution and the laws of our nation grant the president significant authority to make and implement policy,” Podesta writes. ”Congressional gridlock does not mean the federal government stands still.”

The Center for American Progress is funded by liberal billionaire financier George Soros.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

• No refrigeration, plan for emergency assuming no electricity.


• Be nutritious, there may be some more physical activity required (i.e. Blizzard requires more shoveling)


• Keep calorie count

FOOD

• Recommend you start with 2-week supply of food


• Good no-cook food items






Energy bars / breakfast bars




Almonds




Peanut butter




Tuna packages




Canned pasta




Dried fruit / canned fruit




Dry milk




Instant coffee




V-8 juice






• Plan around the way you already eat.


• Build around 3 categories of food






Grocery store goods: often inexpensive, and it’s all familiar stuff. (i.e. mac & cheese)




Freeze dried foods: lightweight and don’t take up much room; more expensive, but priced out per serving, it’s budget-friendly.




Bulk dry food: rice, beans, dehydrated fruits and vegetables, cornmeal, wheat, dried milk, etc.; it will be the backbone of your food storage and last up to 20-30 years.






• Don’t stock up on it unless you know you like it.


• Look at ingredients. You don’t want something high in sodium or preservatives.


• Pay attention to shelf life. Take a look at package, can. Soup doesn’t need water and store this for a few years. Plastic bags and cardboard boxes – 1 year max.

WATER

• Easiest way to store is by using cleaned out 2-liter soda bottles. You can easily clean out with hot water, drop of soap. Rinse thoroughly. That type of plastic is safe for storage.


• Recommend 2-liter soda bottle per person, per day. For consumption and washing.


• If a situation where water is an issue, be sure to have stash of paper plates & freeze dried meals.


• If you can heat water, then at least you can enjoy a hot meal (i.e. mac & cheese, pasta, soup)

STORAGE

• 5 main enemies to storing food






Temperature: ideal is 40 degrees – 72 degrees. For every 18 degrees above 72, food will lose it’s nutritional value by half.




Humidity: Store food off the floor and away from outside walls.




Pests: Keep food in air-tight containers; clean up food particles on the shelves or floor.




Oxygen: Use oxygen absorbers, rotate food, vacuum packing food to reduce oxidation.




Light: Keep your pantry area dark. if food is in clear containers, keep them in labeled boxes with lids.






• Look for places where you can de-clutter (I have water bottles stored under my kids’ beds)


• You can store food in bin under a bed, clear out space in closet and designate a shelf.


• I recommend pieces of furniture that can double as storage (i.e. bench that opens up with a storage component – especially good for small homes).


• Store in a place that you won’t be dipping into constantly.

NON-FOOD ITEMS

• Items like toilet paper can be bulky but can be stored in garage, attic, shed, etc. Moisture will affect it but temperature won’t.


• Non-food items, purposefully 1-2 weeks supply.


• Go through entire day and jot down every non-food item used – soap, shampoo, contact solution, etc. — and buy extras of those.


• Keep easily organized in buckets (i.e. dental, laundry, etc.)


• Give serious consideration to how your family will cope when power is down — communication, entertainment, pet care, keeping things cool in the home, etc.

Climate policy has almost nothing to do anymore with environmental protection, says the German economist and IPCC official Ottmar Edenhofer. The next world climate summit in Cancun is actually an economy summit during which the distribution of the world's resources will be negotiated.

Ottmar Edenhofer was appointed as joint chair of Working Group 3 at the Twenty-Ninth Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Geneva, Switzerland. The deputy director and chief economist of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and Professor of the Economics of Climate Change at the Berlin Institute of Technology will be co-chairing the Working Group “Mitigation of Climate Change” with Ramón Pichs Madruga from Cuba and Youba Sokona from Mali.
