ObamaCare's Big Surprises for the Uninsured   The recently signed health-care legislation will have lasting consequences on health care in America. The massive two-piece package includes federal control of benefits, increased taxes, mandates on employers and individuals, and an expansion of costly and inefficient entitlements. This represents a federal takeover of the U.S. health care system on the pretext of meeting the needs of the millions of Americans who are currently uninsured. However, in a recent paper, Heritage's Kathryn Nix writes: The Scoop Obamacare Implementation Timeline    Outside the Beltway: Utah's Successes Highlight Federalism's Benefits   The Obama Budget Plan: Taxes and Rationing   There is Nothing Conservative about This President   Graphic: Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security Consume All Tax Revenues by 2052  "This 'reform' will result in less choice and competition for health care consumers and, although more Americans will be 'covered,' the quality of this coverage will decrease.  Moreover, certain provisions of the new laws will make obtaining health insurance less desirable by increasing costs, causing even more Americans to drop or lose coverage." According to the Congressional Budget Office, the new law will provide coverage to 32 million by 2019, but will still leave 24 million Americans uninsured. This is a far cry from universal coverage. For those who become newly insured, Nix argues ObamaCare falls short of fulfilling its promises to the uninsured because it: • Dumps millions into Medicaid. "In order to cover low-income uninsured citizens, Obamacare expands eligibility for Medicaid…[which] is a low-performing, low-quality federal program that fails to meet the needs of its beneficiaries. For example, Medicaid's failure to cover the cost to providers of seeing Medicaid patients has greatly reduced the number of doctors who will see Medicaid patients." • Will raise premiums, discouraging coverage. "A guaranteed-issue provision will allow Americans to wait until they are sick to seek out insurance, causing insurance premiums to soar. The individual mandate is intended to combat this by forcing Americans into the insurance market before they are sick. However, since the individual mandate penalty will be significantly less expensive than the cost of an insurance plan, this provision will not achieve universal coverage, and insurance risk pools will begin to consist more exclusively of only those who need insurance the most: the sick and the elderly. Younger, healthier Americans will likely choose to pay the penalty, purchasing insurance only if needed." • Will cause millions to lose their current coverage. "The ranks of the currently uninsured will not simply be reduced by the new law. Rather, as millions of Americans find themselves newly covered, a substantial number will also find that they will lose the coverage they currently carry as a result of the health care overhaul. According to the CBO, 8–9 million Americans that currently receive employer-sponsored coverage will lose it. Of these, 1–2 million would go from receiving coverage from an employer to obtaining coverage through the exchanges." Resorting to mandates, government handouts and poorly functioning entitlement programs to increase coverage will do nothing to improve the health care quality of the uninsured. Though millions Americans will gain coverage, it will not necessarily be the private coverage they want, and it will come at a high cost. 04/22/2010 Economic Freedom Will Save the Earth The New York City sightseeing company Gray Line is promoting an "Earth Week" package of day trips that includes visits to "green spots" like the botanical gardens and flower shopping at Chelsea Market. The fact that these tours will be taken on buses running on fossil fuels does not sit well with the first Earth Day national coordinator Denis Hayes who tells The New York Times what he thinks of such green consumerism: "This ridiculous perverted marketing has cheapened the concept of what is really green. It is tragic." The left in this country has always considered it "tragic" when people make money in this country, and the plight of the earth is just one of many justifications they have used over the years to demonize free markets. Back in the 70s, President Barack Obama's Director for Science and Technology Policy John Holdren even came up with a formula to measure capitalism's evil impact on the environment: I=PAT, which means that environmental impact is equal to population multiplied by affluence multiplied by technology. Thus according to the left, protecting the planet requires fewer people, less wealth and simpler technology. But this is just flat wrong. In fact, studies clearly show that important indicators of environmental quality actually improve as incomes and levels of consumption go up. But this begs the question: what are the best policies that promote economic growth? Economic freedom. New research from the National Bureau of Economic Research shows — over the last 40 years — a strong connection between the worldwide march toward greater economic freedom and the massive reduction in poverty. 1. MSNBC Suspends Donny Deutsch for Daring to Critique Olbermann, Did Nothing After Racially Tinged 'Coconut' Slur
MSNBC on Wednesday suspended host Donny Deutsch in the wake of a segment on Tuesday about what role hosts such as Keith Olbermann and Ed Schultz play in making this country "America the angry." During the piece, Deutsch played a clip of an Olbermann rant and didn't defend Schultz when conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt attacked the "the biggest hate mongers in television." However, in February, when Deutsch dismissed Hispanic senatorial hopeful Marco Rubio as a "coconut," a term that the New York Times described as meaning "brown on the outside and white on the inside," MSNBC took no action.

2. CBS: 'Encouraging News,' GOP 'Changing Their Tone' on Dem Financial Reform Plan
Cheering some Republican support for Democratic financial reform legislation on Wednesday, CBS Early Show co-host Maggie Rodriguez declared: "encouraging news out of Washington, that after a week or so of attacking this financial bill that the Democrats are proposing to regulate Wall Street, Republicans are changing their tone and they seem to be wanting to come on board." On Tuesday, the Early Show had on disgraced ex-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer to discuss financial reform. Co-host Harry Smith introduced him as "the sheriff of Wall Street."

3. No Surprise: NY Times Readership Easily Most Liberal of Any 'Objective' News Outlet
A study on where people of different political persuasions get their news finds that the New York Times' readership is the most liberal of any cited news outlet that holds itself out as an "objective" news source: "Readers of the New York Times print edition are substantially more liberal than those of USA Today or the Wall Street Journal."

04/21/2010 The Crony Capitalist Threat to Our Economic Freedom The Obama administration's game plan for passing their financial regulatory reform plan is clear: ignore the details of their bill, demonize Wall Street, and cast conservatives as the pawns of big bankers. But as Politico reports today, there's a complication in their battle plan: "The Democratic Party is closer to corporate America — and to Wall Street in particular — than many Democrats would care to admit." Politico should be commended for acknowledging the left's cozy ties with corporate America, but then they go on to write: "Some Democrats acknowledge that the legislation — and the harsh anti-Wall Street rhetoric — could cost them campaign contributions from the financial services sector in what is already shaping up to be a tough election year." This is just flat wrong. As evidence and logic clearly demonstrate, the left's harsh anti-business rhetoric and glee for expansive regulation is a boon to their campaign coffers. As USA Today reports, Goldman Sachs alone has given nearly $900,000 since January 2009 to congressional candidates, and according to the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics, 69% of the firm's contributions went to Democrats while 31% went to Republicans. In fact, Goldman is not opposed to Obama's Wall Street Bailout Bill at all. As a Goldman official told Politico Monday:  "We're not against regulation. We're for regulation. We partner with regulators." This echoes reporting done by The Huffington Post on loopholes in the banking bill. HuffPo was told by a financial services lobbyist: "Obtaining a carve-out isn't rocket science. Just give Chairman Dodd (D-CT) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) a ****load of money." And loads of money is what Wall Street has been giving to the authors of the Wall Street Bailout Bill. The Wall Street banker at the center of Goldman's SEC fraud complaint recently solicited money from his banker friends for Sen. Schumer describing him as "one of the few members of Congress that has consistently supported the hedge fund industry."

1. ABC Self-Generates 'Controversy' Over Palin's Innocuous 'Christian Nation' Remark
Horror of horrors, at least to ABC, last week Sarah Palin suggested the U.S. is a "Christian nation," hardly an unusual presumption, but the network discovered "controversy" as anchor Diane Sawyer announced: "Tonight, a question about religion and America, occasioned by comments by Sarah Palin that are getting a lot of attention." A lot of attention from liberal groups with a specific agenda on the subject, a fact left out of the World News story, but revealed in an ABCNews.com article which led with how "two groups dedicated to the separation of church and state are now speaking out against her, arguing that she is misreading the founders' intent." Dan Harris began his Tuesday report: "This latest Palin-provoked controversy is the result of these comments on YouTube." Palin, in poor-quality bouncing video, could be heard saying "God truly has shed his grace on thee, on this country." Harris quoted Palin as asserting it is "mindboggling to suggest that America is not a Christian nation." He countered: "Mainstream historians say no, that if you look at the early documents, including personal letters, it's very clear that the founders did not want to make Christianity the official religion."

2. Matthews: Republicans Like Rubio Taking Part in 'Stalinesque' Purge of GOP
Chris Matthews -- who was offended by Rush Limbaugh calling the Obama administration the "regime"-- claimed the Republicans were engaged in a "Stalinesque" purge. On Tuesday's Hardball Matthews charged that conservatives challenging moderates within the Republican Party (like Marco Rubio versus Charlie Crist in Florida) was akin to Joseph Stalin's violent purges in the 1930s, as he teased an upcoming segment this way: "Coming up what happens to Republicans who don't march to the right wing tune? Well they're getting purged. This is Stalinesque, this stuff."

3. ABC's Ashleigh Banfield Frets Over War of Words Between Clinton and 'Right-wing Polemics'
Good Morning America's Ashleigh Banfield on Sunday spun Bill Clinton's continuing attack on talk radio as a "war of words" between the ex-President and the "right-wing polemics [sic]." The former MSNBC host joined ABC in 2009 after a bitter departure from that cable network.

4. CNN's Brown Touts 'Rise in Right Wing Extremism;' Guest: SPLC 'Exaggerates'
On her CNN program on Monday, Campbell Brown forwarded one of the Left's talking points about the tea parties by stating that "it does appear that we are seeing a rise in right wing extremism recently." However, her guest, historian Robert Churchill of the University of Hartford, downplayed her claim and claimed that groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center were "exaggerating" the threat. Brown brought on Churchill at the bottom half of the 8 pm Eastern hour. Midway through the interview, she made her "right wing extremism" claim and cited "a number of studies that have looked at this. The Department of Homeland Security came out with a study last year saying that, perhaps, it's the economy, or possibly the President's race." The anchor then asked, "What do you see as driving recruitment right now, beyond just sort of the generic more- or not generic, but more general libertarian view?"

5. Olbermann: Limbaugh 'Hate Radio' Has 'Blood on Your Hands' for Oklahoma City Bombing
On Monday's Countdown show, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann used his regular "Worst Person" segment to accuse Rush Limbaugh of having "blood on your hands" for the Oklahoma City bombing in response to the conservative talk radio host pointing out that, while some liberals have tried to blame talk radio for inspiring Timothy McVeigh to commit mass murder, McVeigh himself actually admitted to being motivated by the 1993 raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, and even perpetrated the attack in Oklahoma City on the two-year anniversary of the disastrous event.

6. Bloomberg Editor Al Hunt Attacks Tea Partiers: 'That's Not America'
Bloomberg Washington Editor Al Hunt appeared on the web-only section of Sunday's This Week and dismissed the idea that the Tea Party movement has broad appeal. He derided, "They love Glenn Beck and they're skeptical of John McCain. That's not America."

7. Today Ignores Pew Poll on Less Trusted Government, Publicizes Pew Results on Teen Texting Instead
A new Pew poll that shows just 22 percent of respondents trust the government was actually covered by NBC Nightly News on Monday night but for some reason NBC's Today show didn't find that news interesting as they failed to report on the results. However, on Tuesday's Today, they did find a Pew poll they did like, their results on teen texting, as Today co-anchor Ann Curry relayed: "The study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project says that texting is now the main way that teens communicate."
