The Islamic tsunami

Is an Islamic tidal wave coming? "There is a plan to take over Western civilization," warns David Rubin, "and we need to recognize it for what it is."

Washington Times Editorial

EXCERPTS:

The second and more threatening wave is the creeping takeover of Western political and social institutions, something Mr. Rubin calls the "silent tsunami." The spearhead of this movement is "collusion between Islamic ideologues and the far left to promote the idea of moral relativism," he said, "that all values and ideologies are equal. But they are not. Americans have never believed this."

Confronting the growing threat to Western civilization first involves admitting the problem exists, something President Obama not only refuses to do but strongly denies. The administration has censored any discussion of the problem in these terms within the government, preferring to focus on ill-defined "violent extremism" when the real extremist threat is only partly violent and wholly Islamicist.

Lame Duck Congress, Will You Please Go Now!

The lame duck Congress is a clone of Marvin K. Mooney.  He's the Dr. Seuss character who refused to leave.

Refusing to accept the voters' record-low approval of Congress (13 percent according to Gallup) and refusing to accept their rejection by voters, those running the show are clinging to their last strands of power until the last possible moment.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D, NV) announced, "There is still Congress after Christmas. So if the Republicans think that because they can stall and stall and stall, that we take a break, we're through.  We're not through. Congress ends on January 4th."

The Democrat Congress that refused to do its work on time now blames the other party for resisting last-minute efforts to compress a year's worth of work into the holiday period.  Now while the public is distracted by visions of sugar plums, Congress is distracted by visions of sweet pork.

Thousands of earmarks totaling an estimated $8-billion are in the $1.2-trillion, 1,924-page spending bill which sponsors say must be rushed through to meet a Dec. 18th deadline.  That deadline exists only because Congress ignored the original Sept. 30th deadline; and the date could be extended again to let the new Congress make better decisions.  There's nothing in that bill that couldn't be resolved after the newly-elected Representatives and Senators take office on January 5th, dramatically changing the political makeup of each body.

The same artificial deadline is being used to rush the tax bill.  It's too late already to prevent higher withholding taxes in January because it takes so long for the IRS to adjust withholding tables.  But since prevention of the automatic tax hikes can easily be made retroactive to January 1st, the justification for rushing is a false excuse. Why not let the new Congress handle it?

The real motive for haste comes from President Obama.  He knows the incoming Congress would be less likely to accept his costly add-ons to the tax package, so he cut a deal with the outgoing Congress.  We can do better if we'll just be patient for the newcomers to be sworn in.

But the lame duck Congress is overstaying its welcome for more reasons than just money.

There's the START treaty with its threat to America's missile defense capability; the DREAM Act with its backdoor amnesty provisions; the push to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and all the other things being dragged out when most Americans are busier preparing for Christmas than watch-dogging Congress.  Surprise packages abound under the Congressional Christmas tree.

As Dr. Seuss said of Marvin K. Mooney:

"Will you please go now!
The time has come.
The time has come.
The time is now.
Just go.
Go.
Go!
I don't care how.
You can go by foot.
You can go by cow.

* * *

You can go on skates.
You can go on skis.
You can go in a hat.
But
Please go.
Please!
* * *

Don't you know
The time has come
To go, go, GO!

What a Spending Bill Should Look Like

On March 11, 2009, while signing the the $410 billion, 8,500 earmark laden, Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, President Barack Obama said:

This piece of legislation must mark an end to the old way of doing business and the beginning of a new era of responsibility and accountability that the American people have every right to expect and demand. … I expect future spending bills to be debated and voted on in an orderly way, and sent to my desk without delay or obstruction, so that we don't face another massive, last-minute omnibus bill like this again.

Fast forward to this Tuesday when Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced a 1,924 page, $1.27 trillion omnibus spending bill stuffed with 6,000 earmarks worth $8 billion. If the Senate does not pass a bill by midnight this Saturday, the federal government will shut down. Clearly President Obama has completely failed to bring any change to Washington spending habits.

In contrast, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has just released an alternative that will fund the federal government at current levels through February. It is one page.

This is the first Congress, in the history of the budget process, that failed to even vote on a budget for next year. A responsible Congress would have passed a budget resolution and all the necessary appropriations bills months ago. By failing to even bring a budget resolution to a vote, let alone the actual spending bills, Majority Leader Reid has already proven he is completely irresponsible. He has no legitimate claim to be dictating spending terms to the American people.

The American people thoroughly rejected this Congress' spendthrift ways at the polls last month. There is no reason this business-as-usual omnibus should be the only spending option. The 111th Congress has forfeited all rights to set spending levels for the next year. A one-page continuing resolution that keeps the government funded at current levels, for a month or two, until the next Congress is sworn in, is the only way to go.

Geithner: Gov’t Still Finding Ways to Influence Housing

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Thursday the government is trying to keep as many struggling borrowers as possible in their homes in several programs.

Geithner told a congressional oversight panel that although the Treasury Department's ability to spend new bailout funds for the central foreclosure-prevention effort expired in October, it is running other programs for borrowers in certain situations such as those who are unemployed.

Geithner testified that the housing market remains weak. He said the government is putting downward pressure on mortgage rates through agreements with finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The government has been buying securities backed by mortgages that are issued by Fannie and Freddie.

"The American financial system today is in a much stronger position than it was before the crisis," Geithner said.

He said that Treasury's $700 billion rescue program, which came in at the peak of the financial crisis in the fall of 2008, "will rank as one of the most effective crisis-response programs ever implemented."

The Congressional Budget Office recently estimated that the program will cost taxpayers about $25 billion. Geithner noted that is far below early estimates that it would cost $350 billion or more. And he suggested it could end up costing even less than $25 billion.

Of the total $700 billion bailout, $75 billion was earmarked for mortgage assistance programs, including the central foreclosure-prevention effort known as the Home Affordable Modification Program, or HAMP.

Treasury had the authority, which expired on Oct. 3, to spend up to $30 billion in taxpayer funds on the HAMP program. Only about $4 billion likely will be spent, according to a report issued Tuesday by the oversight panel.

The report said the two-year-old HAMP program won't reach its original goals and the government should come up with clear, measurable objectives for it. Because Treasury has failed to properly analyze the program, it is nearly impossible to determine whether it is a success, the report said.

The program was designed to help people in financial trouble by lowering their monthly mortgage payments. Homeowners who qualify can receive an interest rate as low as 2 percent for five years and a longer repayment period. The homeowners receive temporary modifications that are supposed to become permanent after borrowers make three payments on time and complete the required paperwork.

Treasury's original goal of preventing 3 million to 4 million foreclosures under the program has been reduced several times. The oversight panel estimates that the program will prevent some 700,000 to 800,000 struggling borrowers from losing their homes – compared with 8 million to 13 million foreclosures expected by 2012.

Railing Against Pork: McCain Tells Tea Party to ‘Grab Your Pitchforks’

Earlier this month we noted the unusual metaphor by Sen Claire McCaskill (D-MO) urging people to "take up pitchforks" if tax rates were extended for the top income earners. At that time, Scott wondered what might happen if a conservative said the same thing:

I would never be one to declare the casual use of a metaphor as a literal call for a violent uprising. But it is always interesting to play the reversal game. What if Palin had said this? There would be instantaneous demands for her retraction and apology.

Well, now one such conservative has obliged. While it wasn't Sarah Palin who said it, it was her running mate Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)who used the analogy twice during a Fox appearance Thursday morning.

"I'm saying to the Tea Partiers this morning, 'grab your pitchforks let's stand up against this, it can be stopped,'" he said about halfway through the interview while talking about the pork-laden omnibus spending bill. Then, toward the very end, he repeated the analogy: "Grab the pitchforks and come to Capitol Hill, Tea Partiers."

We have reached out to McCain's office for comment but have not received a response. Today, as we did back then, we'll again note that this is a metaphor for expressing your disdain for something. But we'll sit back and see if our prediction from earlier this month comes true.

UPDATE:

McCain's office has declined to comment, only reiterating our previous point that the Senator was speaking "rhetorically."

Reid could learn from Wisconsin as dems recognize incoming Republicans over union contracts

Wisconsin's state Senate flipped to pubs in the November Punishment, including ousting the sitting dem leader.  Now, 18 months into state-government union contracts, they are finally getting around to approving them.  Ah, but it seems that the outgoing dude, Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker (D-Wausau), has integrity:

Decker said he was not comfortable voting for the contracts now that the "people have spoken" and voted him and other Democrats out of office. He blamed Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle and unions for not reaching an agreement on the contracts before the Nov. 2 election.

Nice.  He's put the form of his leadership beneath the substance of the midterm election result.  If only Harry Reid had similar integrity.

One interesting sideline to the vote.  It seems an Independent who caucuses with the dems had to get the warden's permission to cast his vote – for the unions.  He's doing time for his 4th DUI.

December 16, 1773 The Tea Party Was Born in Boston Harbor

Two-hundred and thirty-seven years ago today  a team of colonists wearing Indian Costumes went on to ships docked in Boston Harbor to show the British that they were sick and tired of oppressive taxes. Two-hundred and thirty-five years later the colonies were now a country, and Americans picked up the mantle of those brave colonists to once again protest oppressive taxation.

We tell the story of the original tea party not only as a tribute but because many of us owe our reborn political involvement to that original group of tax protesters.

On Monday morning, the 29th of November, 1773, a handbill was posted all over Boston, containing the following words: "Friends! Brethren! Countrymen!–That worst of plagues, the detested tea, shipped for this port by the East India Company, is now arrived in the harbor; the hour of destruction, or manly opposition to the machinations of tyranny, stares you in the face. Every friend to his country, to himself and to posterity, is now called upon to meet at Faneuil Hall, at nine o'clock THIS DAY (at which time the bells will ring), to make united and successful resistance to this last, worst, and most destructive measure of administration."

On the 14th of December, another meeting was held in the Old South, when it was resolved to order Mr. Rotch to immediately apply for a clearance for his ship and send her to sea, for his cargo had all been landed excepting the chests of tea. In the meantime, the governor had taken measures to prevent her sailing out of the harbor before the tea should be landed; and he wrote to the ministry, advising the prosecution of some of the leaders of the Sons of Liberty in Boston, for high crimes and misdemeanors. He ordered Admiral Montagu to place two armed ships at the entrance to Boston harbor, to prevent the egress of vessels; and he directed Colonel Leslie, who was in command of the Castle, not to allow any vessel to pass out from the range of his great guns, without a permit signed by himself.

The excitement of the people was now at fever heat. The issues of every future hour were looked for with great anxiety. The air was full of rumors–some true, some false–and on the 16th of December (1773), the day to which the meeting was adjourned, the largest assembly then ever seen in Boston were gathered in the Old South Meeting House, and its vicinity. Samuel P. Savage, of Weston, presided. Full two thousand men from the neighboring towns were there. Seven thousand men soon filled the great fane and overflowed into the street.

It was reported that the Custom-house officers had refused to give Mr. Rotch a clearance for his vessel before the tea–the whole cargo–should be landed. "No vessel can pass the Castle without my permission, and I will not give it," thought the governor, as he rode out to his country-seat at Milton; and he believed he had secured a victory. Not so thought the people. When the great assembly heard of the refusal of the Custom-house officers to grant a clearance, they said to Mr. Rotch: "Go to the governor; protest against their action, and ask him for a permit for your vessel to sail." He hastened to the governor in the country, and the meeting adjourned until three o'clock.

When they reassembled the merchant had not returned, and the question was put to the meeting: "In case the governor shall refuse his permission, will you abide by your former resolutions with respect to not suffering the tea to be landed?" Earnest men spoke to the question. Among the most earnest was young Josiah Quincy, a rising lawyer. He harangued the crowd with prophetic words eloquently spoken. "It is not," he said, "the spirit that reposes within these walls that must stand us in stead. The exertions of this day will call forth events which will make a very different spirit necessary for our salvation. Let us consider the issue. Let us look to the end. Let us weigh and consider, before we advance to those measures which must bring on the most trying and terrible struggle this country ever saw."

When Mr. Quincy ceased speaking, it was sunset and the church was lighted by candles. The question was put, and the thousands answered in the affirmative. There was a call for Mr. Rotch, but he had not returned. He came soon afterward, and reported that the governor peremptorily refused him permission to send his vessel to sea before the tea should be landed. A murmur ran through the vast assemblage, but the rising excitement was hushed into silence when Samuel Adams arose, and in a clear voice said: "This meeting can do no more to save the country."

At that moment a person with painted face and dressed like an Indian gave a war-whoop in the gallery, which was responded to in kind from the door of the meeting-house. Another voice in the gallery shouted: "Boston harbor a teapot to-night! Hurrah for Griffin's Wharf!" The meeting instantly adjourned and the people rushed for the street, and pushed toward Griffin's Wharf, following a number of men disguised as Indians. The populace cheered. Guards were posted to keep order. Among them was John Hancock.

George Hewes was a member of the band of "Indians" that boarded the tea ships that evening. His recollection of the event was published some years later.

boston tea party

"It was now evening, and I immediately dressed myself in the costume of an Indian, equipped with a small hatchet, which I and my associates denominated the tomahawk, with which, and a club, after having painted my face and hands with coal dust in the shop of a blacksmith, I repaired to Griffin's wharf, where the ships lay that contained the tea. When I first appeared in the street after being thus disguised, I fell in with many who were dressed, equipped and painted as I was, and who fell in with me and marched in order to the place of our destination.

When we arrived at the wharf, there were three of our number who assumed an authority to direct our operations, to which we readily submitted. They divided us into three parties, for the purpose of boarding the three ships which contained the tea at the same time. The name of him who commanded the division to which I was assigned was Leonard Pitt. The names of the other commanders I never knew. We were immediately ordered by the respective commanders to board all the ships at the same time, which we promptly obeyed. The commander of the division to which I belonged, as soon as we were on board the ship, appointed me boatswain, and ordered me to go to the captain and demand of him the keys to the hatches and a dozen candles. I made the demand accordingly, and the captain promptly replied, and delivered the articles; but requested me at the same time to do no damage to the ship or rigging. We then were ordered by our commander to open the hatches and take out all the chests of tea and throw them overboard, and we immediately proceeded to execute his orders, first cutting and splitting the chests with our tomahawks, so as thoroughly to expose them to the effects of the water.

In about three hours from the time we went on board, we had thus broken and thrown overboard every tea chest to be found in the ship, while those in the other ships were disposing of the tea in the same way, at the same time. We were surrounded by British armed ships, but no attempt was made to resist us.

…The next morning, after we had cleared the ships of the tea, it was discovered that very considerable quantities of it were floating upon the surface of the water; and to prevent the possibility of any of its being saved for use, a number of small boats were manned by sailors and citizens, who rowed them into those parts of the harbor wherever the tea was visible, and by beating it with oars and paddles so thoroughly drenched it as to render its entire destruction inevitable."

(Hawkes, James A, Retrospect of the Boston Tea-Party, with a Memoir of George R. T. Hewes)

Meltdown Coming Soon

Tom Woods, one of my favorite historians, wrote a book detailing the 2008 financial crisis titled 'Meltdown.' The book outlines how government intervention and ignorance led to the mess we're still cleaning up. While this is something we all, more or less, know as right-leaning persons, someone took the effort to seriously synthesize and present the case in an academic fashion. Woods is a great writer and consistently offers clever solutions, which is why I'm so glad to hear that 'Meltdown' is being adapted into a documentary-style film. I doubt it will reach a very broad audience, but for people like myself who want to hear the case he presents, but maybe are too pressed for time to sift through a few hundred pages, it will be a fantastic way to spend an hour.

I find documentaries to be a very useful, easy way to digest information. (Particularly by this time of year as my eyes are pretty sore from reading the books my courses assign...) However, the classic problem has always been that the big players in film, and most media, have a liberal slant to them. I suspect, that, in age where the internet has made movies, marketing, and ideas far more accessible, this domination will be undercut. Companies like the Moving Picture Institute produce films that help spread information from a classical liberal perspective.

Michelle Malkin Reveals Democrats’ Massive Lame Duck Land Grab (Video)

"In the waning few days of the 111th Congress, the Democrats seem obsessed with forcing – just as they forced Obamacare down our unwilling throats – one monstrosity after another upon us… Permit me to state the obvious: These congressional leaders have nothing but contempt for you, for the Constitution and for common sense. They're drunk on power, and they live for self-aggrandizement and personal enrichment. One might ask, how do they sleep at night? Their consciences are anesthetized by their almost religious adherence to an insane utopian ideology that always fails, that justifies the most outrageous assaults on personal liberty and wealth, and that simultaneously imparts to them the delusion that they are righteous, compassionate and enlightened leaders."

David Kupelian
World Net Daily
December 15, 2010

And, the corruption never stops.
As a final assault on the American people, Democrats are planning on ramming massive land grab legislation through Congress before the year ends.
Michelle Malkin revealed their latest underhanded scheme on Hannity last night:

Michelle Malkin wrote about this latest power grab by democrats yesterday in her column.

In a last-ditch lame duck push, eco-lobbyists have been furiously pressuring Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to pass a monstrous 327-page omnibus government lands bill crammed with more than 120 separate measures to lock up vast swaths of wilderness areas. Despite the time crunch, Senate Democrats in search of 60 votes are working behind the scenes to buy off green Republicans. House Democrats would then need a two-thirds majority to fast-track the bill to the White House before the GOP takes over on Jan. 5.

Yes, the hurdles are high. But with Reid and company now vowing to work straight through Christmas into the new year (when politicians know Americans are preoccupied with the holidays), anything is possible. The Constitution is no obstacle to these power grabbers. Neither is a ticking clock.

The Democrats' brazen serial abuse of the lame-duck session is as damning as the green job-killing agenda enshrined in the overstuffed public lands package. Earlier this month, Reid assigned worker bees on three Senate committees — Energy and Natural Resources, Commerce, and Environment and Public Works — to draw up their public lands wish list. All behind closed doors, of course. House Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., rightly dubbed it a "Frankenstein omnibus of bills" and pointed out that the legislation "includes dozens of bills that have never passed a single committee, either chamber of Congress, or even been the subject of a hearing."

There's more on this destructive power grab here.
