US House Whip-Up Mon 10/18/10: MythBusters? Really

He must be joking.  Is Obama going after the white-geek vote now?

The White House announced this morning that President Obama will appear on the television show "Myth Busters." They sure like their TV appearances… Myth Busters, however, could be an appropriate venue for President Obama, considering over the last 20 months Democrats have cooked up quite a few myths.

What do we mean, you ask? Before he even assumed office President Obama made "shovel ready jobs" the centerpiece of his economic agenda, yet today he claims that they don't exist. Then the White House claimed the stimulus would keep unemployment below 8%. Moving forward, the President claimed that his health care overhaul would lower costs for patients. Don't forget Speaker Pelosi promised Americans that she would lead the most honest, open and ethical congress in history. And last but not least President Obama promised to go line by line through the budget … Stay tuned throughout the day as we 'bust' these myths one by one …

Now on to the news …

AGENDA WATCH:  After 2 Years Of The Obama/Pelosi Agenda, Americans Want To Go In A Different Direction

Backlash:  The Obama/Pelosi Agenda Comes Back To Haunt Democrats … More bad polls. More bad fundraising numbers. More dreary talk on the Sunday shows. It added up to a brutal weekend for Democrats, as the consensus among election analysts, already bearish on the party's prospects, took a turn for the worse over the past 48 hours. In the eyes of the experts, the House Democratic majority most likely won't survive Nov. 2, with political handicappers expanding their predictions to envision the possibility of a Democratic wipeout. … One House Democrat, reflecting widespread conversations with his colleagues, guessed Sunday that his party will lose 50 seats. Many, he said, are calling with urgent pleas for more contributions. … President Barack Obama's senior adviser David Axelrod didn't sound as optimistic as Gibbs, predicting on CNN's "State of the Union" only that "the Republicans will have more seats in Congress regardless of whether they have control or not."  Politico

The Enthusiasm Gap Is No Myth, Americans Don't Agree With The Direction President Obama Is Taking The Country. The enthusiasm gap between Democrats and Republicans in the first midterm elections of President Barack Obama's presidency is no myth – and his party may suffer hugely in two weeks because of it.  Just half of those who voted for Obama in 2008 say they will definitely show up Nov. 2 while two-thirds of those who voted for Republican presidential nominee John McCain in the last election say they're certain to vote next month, according to an Associated Press-Knowledge Networks poll.  The Associated Press

Reality Check: it's not what Congress didn't accomplish the past two years, it's what it did do that seems to have voters most riled.  The Associated Press

THE ECONOMY:  President Obama's Economic Policies Have Made The Economy Worse

The President's Policies Have Prolonged The Effects Of The Recession. What is crystal clear, however, is that we are in the midst of the most pathetic economic recovery since the Great Depression. As John Lott put it recently: "The only records being broken are for the stubbornly slow recovery." … Obama's response to this has been to say that he was dealt a terrible hand, and to say that things could have been worse if it weren't for the all the things he's done since taking office. "The challenge," he said at the Sept. town hall, "is that the hole was so deep that a lot of people out there are still hurting."  But the evidence from past recoveries shows that things could be — and arguably should be — much better than they are now. Which strongly suggests that, however bad the recession was, something the federal government is doing today is putting a drag on the normal recovery trajectory.  AOL News

THE ECONOMY (2):  Republicans Aim To Bring Federal Employee Benefits In line With Those Of Private Sector Workers

Whip Cantor, Republicans Look To Bring Federal Employee Benefits In line With Private Sector Workers. Republicans are even more critical of federal compensation: 83 percent believe feds get better pay and benefits than other workers, and almost two-thirds believe they're overpaid. But 80 percent of the GOP believes federal pay and benefits should be on par with compensation at comparable private-sector jobs. … In an interview Friday, House Minority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was unapologetic, saying the poll results mirror what he's heard on the campaign trail.  "There's marked differences when it comes to unemployment and job security in the federal sector than there is in the private," Cantor said. He's proposed a series of government spending cuts, including a one-year freeze on the hiring of non-security federal workers and echoes the sentiments of other GOP candidates who believe the government's been to generous to its workers.  Cantor cited Heritage Foundation statistics that found the government has grown by 12 percent since the recession began and that federal workers earn approximately 30 percent to 40 percent more in total pay and benefits than private sector workers.  The Washington Post

Tax Rates, Spending, and Size of Government Dominate Issues Across The Nation. Voter anger about the size of government will be tested directly Nov. 2 in a series of sweeping statewide ballot measures that would dramatically slash taxes or, in a few cases, raise them.  Nearly 100 statewide ballot measures on taxing and spending will dominate the list of ballot initiatives next month, reports the National Taxpayers Union, which advocates lower taxes. More than 450 local tax issues will be considered in 33 states, too. USA Today

THE ECONOMY (3):   A Foreclosure Moratorium Would Have Devastating Effects

Sec. Donovan:  A Blanket Moratorium On Foreclosures Would Do More Harm Than Good. The recent revelations about foreclosure processing — that some banks may be repossessing the homes of families improperly — has rightly outraged the American people. The notion that many of the very same institutions that helped cause this housing crisis may well be making it worse is not only frustrating — it's shameful. No one should lose their home as a result of a bank mistake. No one. … But a national, blanket moratorium on all foreclosure sales would do far more harm than good … The Huffington Post

THE WAR ON TERROR ROUNDUP

NATO Official: Bin Laden Is In Northwest Pakistan. Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri are believed to be hiding close to each other in houses in northwest Pakistan, but are not together, a senior NATO official said.  "Nobody in al Qaeda is living in a cave," said the official, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the intelligence matters involved.  CNN

Saudi Intelligence Warns Europe, Particularly France, Of Terror Threats. Saudi intelligence services have warned of a new terror threat from al-Qaida against Europe, particularly in France, Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux said Sunday.  He said the warning of a potential attack by al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula was received "in the last few hours, few days."  European officials were informed that "al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula was doubtless active or envisioned being active" on the "European continent, notably France," Hortefeux said during a joint TV and radio interview.  "The threat is real," he said on RTL-LCI-Le Figaro's weekly talk show.  The Associated Press

Some Democrats Question Attacks On The Chamber … The Hill

Union Leader:  No "Political Institution" Gets The Democrat Message Out Like Unions. "No other political institution does this," Richard Trumka, the AFL-CIO president, said in a briefing for reporters earlier this month. "I see the enthusiasm. They are focused on things. They understand the importance of this election."  The New York Times
