From the archive, 21 October 1947: "Communist infiltration" in Hollywood

Originally published in the Manchester Guardian on 21 October 1947

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 20

In Washington is now being presented one of those extraordinary public spectacles which come to full flowering only in this country. The committee of the House of Representatives on un-American activities has begun a solemn survey of the question of Communism in Hollywood.

Perhaps in order not to appear too judicial the committee has announced in advance of its inquiry that it is convinced that there is a large and dangerous degree of the revolutionary spirit in Hollywood: this judgement might be based on the preliminary inquiry conducted there some months ago. Many witnesses will be Hollywood actors or directors who had been dragged wholesale to Washington by the committee at great personal inconvenience.

One of the purposes of the present investigation is to prove that during the war the Federal Government brought pressure on Hollywood to make pro-Russian films, or at least to abstain from making films hostile to Russia, which was the United States' ally. Those who know Hollywood intimately say that it is indeed true that there are some Communists among the actors, writers, and directors. But they are few and if they have been able to put Communist propaganda into films no one can remember having seen it. The passages which are cited by the Un-American Activities Committee usually consist of mild statements that democracy is a good thing or that poor people should have enough to eat.

This committee is the same one which some years ago under a different chairman solemnly accused Shirley Temple, then aged about ten, of being a Communist. The actual control of a Hollywood product rests in the hands of the owners of the great film companies who are almost invariably wealthy and conservative men who would not dream of permitting their films to contain revolutionary propaganda. In the case of several companies the chief shareholders are big banks in New York City.

While many of the activities of the Committee on Un-American Activities and other anti-Red groups seem amusing they have their serious side. Anti-Russian feeling is now so deep in the US that anybody whose loyalty to capitalist democracy is called in question is likely to lose his job and have great difficulty in finding another. This is true even though he may be innocent. In most investigations of this kind the accused is not permitted to know in advance what charges are to be made against him or to be represented by counsel at the hearing or to have a transcript of the evidence.

A Nuclear Chavez Gets Obama’s OK

Not since the days of Jimmy Carter have we seen as craven a U.S. response to a provocation as Chavez's plan for two 1,200-megawatt nuclear reactors 1,400 miles from our shores.

IBD Editorials

EXCERPTS:

Venezuela's Hugo Chavez moves ahead with plans to go nuclear with Russian help, and the response from our president has been to give the lunatic dictator his full backing. This is trouble.

Oh. So forget the Monroe Doctrine. Never mind President Kennedy's response to the nuclear ambitions of Cuba. Obama's new message to the hemisphere is that Chavez can go nuclear because he's a democracy and will therefore act responsibly.

The real problem is the relationships Chavez is forging. Chavez's visit to Russia and Iran to tout the nuclear deal was meant to show the U.S. that even after he lost a legislative election in September, he still mattered. And rogue states like Russia and Iran will still do dirty business with him — even if China won't.

Chavez says he means to bring in Russian and Iranian experts for his nuclear project. That opens the door to influence from the mafiya-linked criminal underworld that includes the terrorists and arms dealers at the edges of Russia's and Iran's power structures.

Chavez's closest Russian associate is Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, a raving anti-American with rumored ties to illegal arms dealer Viktor Bout. The latter was arrested in Thailand soon after the discovery in 2008 of a computer belonging to FARC terrorists.

Obama should be muscling Russia to drop the plan and threatening to make Georgia a NATO member if he doesn't. Instead, right now, the approach is to make nice with a predator who has it in for us in more ways than one.It may buy us peace now, but it will buy only trouble in the long run.

White House: Obama Will Push Lame-Duck Congress to Legalize Homosexuality in U.S. Armed Forces

President Barack Obama will push the Senate to pass a bill that includes an amendment to end the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and allow homosexuality in the U.S. armed forces, according to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

By Fred Lucas at CNSNews.com

EXCERPTS:

While "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) is a directive in Defense Department rules, it stems from a federal law (10 U.S.C. 654) enacted by Congress in 1993, which prohibits homosexuals from serving in the military. Under DADT, military officials are not supposed to ask, and soldiers are not supposed to disclose whether they are homosexual.

Gibbs said President Obama plans to lobby for the bill's passage in the lame duck session, the same Congress where Democrats (and two Independents) hold a 59-seat majority in the Senate.

In the lame duck session, members of Congress voted out of office in November can still vote on controversial bills without being accountable to the voters again.

The Pentagon is set to complete a study in December on the issue with suggestions on how to implement the policy without causing disruptions.

Juan Williams Fired From NPR for Comments About Muslims on O’Reilly Factor (Video)

Unbelievable. NPR fired Juan Williams on Wednesday after he made comments about Muslims and terrorism. They don't care much about free and accurate speech on NPR.
Is there any doubt that the far left is in control of our media?

The far left website Think Progress was behind his firing.

The New York Times reported:

NPR has terminated its contract with Juan Williams, one of its senior news analysts, after he made comments about Muslims on the Fox News Channel.

NPR said in a statement that it gave Mr. Williams notice of his termination on Wednesday night.

The move came after Mr. Williams, who is also a Fox News political analyst, appeared on the "The O'Reilly Factor" on Monday. On the show, the host, Bill O'Reilly, asked him to respond to the notion that the United States was facing a "Muslim dilemma." Mr. O'Reilly said, "The cold truth is that in the world today jihad, aided and abetted by some Muslim nations, is the biggest threat on the planet."

Mr. Williams said he concurred with Mr. O'Reilly.

He continued: "I mean, look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

Mr. Williams also made reference to the Pakistani immigrant who pleaded guilty this month to trying to plant a car bomb in Times Square. "He said the war with Muslims, America's war is just beginning, first drop of blood. I don't think there's any way to get away from these facts," Mr. Williams said.

NPR said in its statement that the remarks "were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR."

Evidence Surfaces of Mexican Drug Cartel Activities in the U.S.

The evidence disputes Napolitano's assurances as recently as Oct. 18 that border enforcement is up and illegal immigration is down. Is her job defending the border or propagandizing for Obama?

The Americano

For months now, politician and law enforcement officials from states on the border with Mexico keep telling the American public and the Obama administration that the border is not secure and drug cartels who operate with impunity in Mexico could easily bring crime into this country.

Not possible was the response from Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who as recently as Monday was crowing about how a 17 percent drop in Border Patrol arrests this year shows heightened enforcement is slowing illegal immigration.

The figures came in an Associated Press story published in The Washington Post Monday. It said that the Border Patrol made about 463,000 arrests during the federal government's fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, down from 556,032 the previous 12 months. It marks the fifth straight year of declines.

That was Monday. On Tuesday, a new story published in The Washington Post questioned much of what Napolitano has been saying.

The story written from San Diego, California, cited U.S. authorities who tapped the cell phones of a major Mexican drug cartel who had opened a branch office on the U.S. side of the border.

"Their surveillance effort captured more than 50,000 calls over six months, conversations that reached deep into Mexico and helped build a sprawling case against 43 suspects – including Mexican police and top officials – allegedly linked to a savage trafficking ring known as the Fernando Sánchez Organization," the story said.

It added that wiretaps and confidential informants disclosed that the suspects " plotted kidnappings and killings and hired American teenage girls, with nicknames like Dopey, to smuggle quarter-pound loads of methamphetamine across the border for $100 a trip. To send a message to a rival, they dumped a disemboweled dog in his mother's front yard."

U.S. law enforcement officials quoted in the story say the most worrisome thing about the Fernando Sanchez Organization was how aggressively it moved to set up operations in the United States, working out of a San Diego apartment it called "The Office."

The Post said that this evidence came at a time of "heightened concern in Washington that drug violence along the border may spill into the United States, the case dubbed 'Luz Verde,' or Green Light, shows how Mexican cartels are trying to build up their U.S. presence."

What the story did not clarify is how the comments made by Napolitano Monday make sense in light of the information U.S. officials disclosed Tuesday.

The Fernando Sanchez Organization's San Diego venture functioned almost like a franchise, prosecutors say, giving it greater control over lucrative smuggling routes and drug distribution networks north of the border.

"They moved back and forth, from one side to the other. They commuted. We had lieutenants of the organization living here in San Diego and ordering kidnappings and murders in Mexico," said Todd Robinson, the assistant U.S. attorney who will prosecute the alleged drug ring next year.

As The Washington Post portrays it, "the case shows that as the border becomes less of an operational barrier for Mexican cartels, it appears to be less of one for U.S. surveillance efforts. Because the suspects' cell phone and radio traffic could be captured by towers on the northern side of the border, U.S. agents were able to eavesdrop on calls made on Mexican cell phones, between two callers in Mexico – a tactic prosecutors say has never been deployed so extensively."

The story told of a cartel leader hear on a wire tap order a former homicide detective from Tijuana, negotiating with a Mexican state judicial police officer about a job offer to lead a death squad.

Recorded on other calls: the operation's biggest catch, Jesus Quiñones Máquez, a high-ranking Mexican official and alleged cartel operative code-named "El Riñón," or "The Kidney." As he worked and socialized with U.S. law enforcement officials in his role as international liaison for the Baja California attorney general's office, Quiñones passed confidential information to cartel bosses and directed Mexican police to take action against rival traffickers, prosecutors say.

He and 34 other suspects are now in U.S. jails. The remaining eight are still at large.

Investigators told The Washington Post that it is not unusual for Mexican cartel leaders and their underlings to move north to seek refuge, or place representatives in such cities as Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta to manage large deliveries of drugs. But the Fernando Sánchez Organization was more ambitious. It was building a network in San Diego, complete with senior managers to facilitate large and small drug shipments and sales."

The gang being organized in San Diego is an offshoot of the Tijuana cartel, led by baby-faced Fernando Sanchez Arellano, a nephew of the once fearsome Arellano-Felix brothers who ran the Tijuana drug trade for almost 20 years before they were captured or killed. The nephew's organization is a weaker syndicate, at war with itself and rivals, police say, and locked in a desperate struggle to maintain market share in the highly competitive billion-dollar drug corridor into California.

"Unlike the cartel crews in Mexico, which are typically built on strong ties between families or friends, the San Diego franchise recruited from U.S.-based Latino street gangs. Some were illegal immigrants, others U.S. citizens," the story said citing evidence obtained from arrest warrants.

Twelve of the 43 indicted have alleged gang affiliations in San Diego. Six of the 43 are current or former Mexican law enforcement officers. Eight are women.

"You couldn't pick these people out of a crowd," Leonard Miranda, a retired captain in the Chula Vista, Calif., police department who worked on the investigation told The Washington Post. "Some of them kept a very low profile. Their family members didn't even know."

According to the 86-page federal racketeering indictment unsealed July 23 quoted by The Post, cartel members operated stash houses, managed smuggling crews, distributed marijuana and methamphetamine, trafficked weapons, laundered money, committed robberies and collected drug debts. When people did not pay, they were kidnapped or targeted with execution on both sides of the border.

According to U.S. law enforcement officials, the Mexican government was not involved in the investigation.

Juan Williams, Liberal, Not Liberal Enough For NPR

Ah, litmus tests. The left loves them. And tonight, NPR and Fox News commentator Juan Williams got hung by one. Did Fox News fire Juan Williams? you ask. I mean, that would be the natural guess, right? You know the fascist thought bullies over there. But no. NPR fired Juan Williams for giving his honest opinion. It wasn't politically correct. Here's what Juan said:

O'REILLY: Continuing now with our lead story, danger from the Muslim world.

Joining us from Washington FOX analysts Mary Katharine Ham and Juan Williams.

So, Juan, I got to tell everybody, own up to this, that talking points memo was really written by Alan Colmes.

So, where am I going wrong there, Juan.

JUAN WILLIAMS, FOX NEWS POLITICAL ANALYST: Well, actually, I hate to say this to you because I don't want to get your ego going. But I think you're right. I think, look, political correctness can lead to some kind of paralysis where you don't address reality.

I mean, look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.

Now, I remember also that when the Times Square bomber was at court, I think this was just last week. He said the war with Muslims, America's war is just beginning, first drop of blood. I don't think there's any way to get away from these facts.

But I think there are people who want to somehow remind us all as President Bush did after 9/11, it's not a war against Islam. President Bush went to a mosque –

O'REILLY: Well, there isn't any theology involved in this at all from my perspective, Juan. But you live in the liberal precincts. You actually work for NPR, OK?

WILLIAMS: Yes.

Now here's the thing, nine times out of ten, I'm yelling at the screen when Juan is giving his opinion. I'm not alone–Michelle Malkin talks about directly arguing with Juan. One time out of ten, he'll say something that makes sense and I'll wonder how on earth such a sensible opinion can come from a guy who is so often otherwise wrong.

That is to say, I disagree, vehemently with Juan Williams on nearly everything.

And yet, I don't want him to lose his job just because he says something that someone might deem offensive or disagree with. Hell, nearly every lib on the Fox network, and many conservatives, say ridiculous things that are disagreeable and often offensive to the average person. Unless someone is a vile hatemonger, a person should feel that he will keep his job even if it's outside some p.c. orthodoxy.

What is wrong with liberals? Michelle goes on to document how they're behind Juan's firing. I find it inexplicable. But then, they've had it in for Juan because he deigns to commentate on Fox which just grinds their gears. He's like a lib in a short skirt, he had it coming.

P.S. Clearly, NPR is not a neutral organization. They need to be defunded. Now.

UPDATED:

Media Matters, Eric Boehlert demonstrates his intolerance:

"Note to Juan Williams, when you go on Fox and announce "I'm not a bigot, but…." bad things are going to happen; http://nyti.ms/bdBJWv

And CAIR is there, too:

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said that during an appearance Monday on Fox's "O'Reilly Factor," Williams backed Bill O'Reilly's recent claim that "Muslims killed us on 9/11″ and then said: "[W]hen I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

Well, this will send a message to liberal commentators. Toe the line, libs, or you'll be lynched mobbed.

Report: Steny Hoyer Knuckle-Punched GOP Opponent in the Back (Video)

During last week's debate Democrat Majority Leader Steny Hoyer threatened his GOP opponent Charles Lollar telling the Republican, "I'm coming after you."

Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Now there are new allegations… According to a local reporter Hoyer actually knuckle punched Charles Lollar in the back during the debate.

Video of the Lollar for Congress press conference on Tuesday where Charles Lollar addresses his allegation that Steny Hoyer threatened him last Wednesday. A new allegation that Hoyer "knuckle punched" him in the back starts at 4:55 in the video. (Video Source: Lollar Campaign)

Southern Maryland Online
reported on the latest allegations against Majority Leader Steny Hoyer:

On Monday Charles Lollar's campaign issued a press release stating incumbent Steny Hoyer said to Lollar, "I'm coming after you," and then repeated the words after Lollar dismissed them with a smile. Hoyer's spokesperson, Maureen Beach, denied the words were ever said. The alleged interchange occurred last Wednesday in Waldorf during the Charles County Chamber of Commerce candidate's forum.

Lollar held a press conference Tuesday in Bowie to discuss the incident, at which time a question from the audience brought forth another allegation. The questioner said he believed he had witnessed Hoyer make a "knuckle punch to your (Lollar's) back" and asked Lollar to confirm the incident. The man said he was sitting in the front videotaping the forum when he witnessed Hoyer make the aforementioned statement and the subsequent "punch."

Lollar spokesperson Patt Parker told somd.com today that she could not identify the person who posed the question, but believed he was a reporter from So. Maryland Today, formerly St. Mary's Today. According to their editor, she had several reporters at the press conference, but could not confirm if the man asking the question was theirs. The man was off camera.

"I could of swore, towards that end, just about shortly after he made that remark to you, that there was like a knuckle punch to your back. Were my eyes, am I that blind, did I make that up or was he, was he giving you kind of a goad there?" stated the questioner.

"You are not making that up," responded Lollar. "It was done not just once, but twice."

That's wild. We all could see Pelosi knuckle punch her opponent, but Hoyer? Maybe he is a true democrat after all?

More Hope & Change… Dem’s Financial Bill Forces Banks to Get Rid of Free Checking

More hope and change…

Everything these radicals touched ended up costing Americans more money.

The democrat's financial overhaul bill is forcing banks to get rid of free checking.
The AP reported:

Free checking as we know it is ending.

The days when you could walk into a bank branch and open an account with no charges and no strings attached appear to be over. Now you have to jump through some hoops — keep a high balance, use direct deposit or swipe your debit card several times a month.

One new account at Bank of America charges $8.95 per month if you want to bank with a teller or get a paper statement.

Almost all of the largest U.S. banks are either already making free checking much more difficult to get or expected to do so soon, with fees on even basic banking services.

It's happening because a raft of new laws enacted in the past year, including the financial overhaul package, have led to an acute shrinking of revenue for the banks. So they are scraping together money however they can.

Bank of America, which does business with half the households in America, announced a dramatic shift Tuesday in how it does business with customers. One key change: Free checking, a mainstay of American banking in recent years, will be nearly unheard of.

Maybe this explains why a majority say President Obama has either brought no change to Washington or has brought change for the worse.
